So Kemp had a huge game.... means he is in a class with Glover? How about Ridley? He could have provided more support on the boards too. A 24 point victory speaks for itself.

I was at the game and I thought that Kemp looked pretty good. He's a big man and moves very well for a guy his size, and hits the offensive boards. Ridley and Diggs don't match up well against him and Glover needs to stay out of foul trouble, so he's not a VG defender. I'm saying that Kemp is better than I thought.

Momo had 8 rebounds to lead us. Kemp had 15, Ridley and glover combined for 10. That has to improve imo

Other than Sean Brennan and the News, I don't even bother to check local papers re Iona anymore. I go straight to ESPN/CBS/national outlets.

When the Gaels play a dominate big man (6'10 or taller). the chances of Glover getting into foul trouble if he mixes it up underneath are huge. If Glover doesn't play we are in trouble. Big trouble. He grabbed 7 boards. Ridley has not proved to be consistent thus far and played 22 minutes in the game, pulled down 3 boards and had a height disadvantage. The guards needed to help and they did. One of the weaknesses on this team is length and we can't demand the players to grow taller. Gomez has the height, but needs more strength and experience. IMO.

tootie, my copy of the JN has the PoJn story, which ran across the top of page three, though they didn't attribute it to the PJ. And I neglected to comment on the changeover of the Marist gym. They put wrap around seating with all chairback seats on the sides. Also added two giant screens which show up to date stats and game replays as they happen. Bottom line it looks great, with attendance capacity of 3200.

Solid win, but I was concerned about one thing. The Gaels seemed to allow the ball to get into the lane (mainly by passes to the post, but also by penetration) way too easily. They did a decent job defending after Marist had it in the lane, but I am afraid a better team would really take advantage.
I noticed this in the first half, but it obviously didn't hurt us too much. In the begining of the second half it did hurt and helped Marist get back into the game.
Iona only took 11 3 pointers and made 6 (5 by Smyth). I think it is a good sign that they could win big without making a ton of 3's.
Momo might have had his best game as a Gael. I love when he drives the lane (under control). If he picks his spots well, he should be very difficult to stop in the MAAC.
Marist TV announcers were decent except:
1) They kept calling Dezouvre "De-zoo-ver". (Not as bad as the Denver announcer who was very proud that he "correctly" pronounced it "De-zoo-vwah".)
2) The color guy kept talking about Iona "signing free agents" and talked about them having "one and done" transfers.
None of Iona's transfers are one year players. The only two I can remember in Iona's history are Earl Johnson and Derek Canada. He seemed to be under the impression that Momo was a Senior. The play by play guy was much more fair and pointed out that Marist used to recruit a good number of JUCOs and he believed this stopped mainly becaue they didn't work out well.

I also enjoyed the comment that Marist did a good job of deny Iona 3's in the second half, when we were pretty much pounding inside to Glove for 31 pts and driving effectively to the hoop. Thought that was funny.

Gaelman, unless you're doing it for the entertainment value you described, you can open a second ICGaels window and listen to Iona's audio while watching the muted video from the opposing team. I have no interest in hearing any other radio commentary other than our own. I'm more lenient with the TV commentary.

It is interesting to see how the Gaels are viewed by their opponents. One of the things I took away, was how impressed the Marist guys were with Iona's depth. They marvelled that we had a pre-season All-MAAC player coming off the bench (Smyth) and thought that Iona's backup guards could probably be All-MAAC if they had a chance to start. As I said, the Marist guys weren't bad (except for the "one and done" comments from the color guy). They were pretty objective about the refs calls, as well.

Always enjoy hearing other teams fans and broadcasters put down juco players. These people have little knowledge of the facts of basketball life today. The NCAA has all but shut down the prep school route to college for basketball players. Many players today, therefore, opt for jc. Same type of players sames type of qualifications as the ones that used to go the prep route. Only three differences: They are better prepared for college bothe academically and athletically. But they only usuall have two years of eligibility left.
