Right now the only thing that can get worse for the College related to the Br. Ligouri administration is if Iona were funneling $$$ to the Taliban. Let's pray that this is a false accusation, or if true that there aren't any more victims, and that he wasn't able to engage in any of this despicable activity while Pres. of Iona.
Holy effin smokes.

Remember, there were accusations against Cardinal Bernadine that allegedly happened mamy, many years before the accuser came forward. These accusations turned out to be false, they were a figment of the guys imagination. So give Brother the benefit of the doubt until proven.

I don't know if any of this is true, but I'm amazed at how many are willing to take an acquisation, and one that is 42-43 years old at face value. It's almost impossible to prove your innocense. Bottom line it might or might not be true. And I have to admit I have no idea, but do think that it's a stretch to move something from 1969 to the present (Brother's term as president) is just that A stretch. Of course if ctbill has some other info, than that could make a difference.

Perhaps I'm a bit cynical given the Church's record and that of the ICB's. As all have pointed out a person should be considered innocent until proven guilty. Maybe I would have felt better with a complete denial by Brother, rather than a "he can't be reached for comment."

I do not think anyone is assuming he is guilty. His tenure at Iona produced some major issues, some that have come to light at the end of his term and I think people are tired of having his named tied to the school. For his sake I hope he is innocent and unless other people step forward I would think the chances of this being true are slim. Either way the school needs this type of publicity like they need a hole in the head.

I86, it's almost impossible to prove your innoscence in a case like this unless the accusor recants. I thought I read that the charges were investigated (Though by the Brothers) and found wanting. Who do you see coming forward? I don't understand what you mean. Thanks.

I86, reading your earlier post, I now assume you mean another victim/victims. If so that would make sense.

Who do you see coming forward? I don't understand what you mean. Thanks. In 99.9999% of these cases a perp does not just abuse a single child. So unless other people some forward I find the allegations to be a little suspect. The news said the independent review found the allegations to be "unsubstantiated due to major inconsistencies." If other students came forward to file similar complaints I might believe there was a legitimate issue here. So far that has not been the case so I would suspect he is more likely innocent. If you ask any cop who investigated such cases, it would be highly unlikely that he would only abuse a single child. The man taught at three different schools after Farley, as well as Iona, yet no one else has made such allegations. With that said the recent publicity might bring someone else forward if such behavior did take place. I hope that is not the case. As much as I have never been a fan of Liguori, and I do not like how he ran his administration at Iona, he is still innocent until proven otherwise.

I've been told at this point I should presume Brother Ligouri innocent, and I do. FWIW, predators usually don't target 16 year olds; their victims are usually younger with less developed defense mechanisms. They almost always attack more than once, and unfortunately almost always attack more than one victim. (The exception to the multiple victim rule is found with incestuous cases, often times a single victim is subject to multiple assaults in these cases.) The person telling this has no sympathy for pedophiles and predators, but needs more proof before damaging a mans reputation; as on the surface this appears to be an A-typical scenario.
I'm being told this by my wife, and earlier in her career her case load was physically and sexually abused children in NYC (wasn't a big fan of those "how was your day at work" conversations back then). I hope this turns out not to be true, but I realize it certainly could be. One thing I do know is, there are a lot of monsters out there; and never rule out anyone of this evil!

I tend to agree that most sexual offenders will repeat, but the percentage is no where near the 99.99999 given. The fear of apprehension will in many instances keep the compulsion surpressed and under control, particulary if they are sexual in nature. The degrees of that compulsion will determine its results. In my years of sexual investigative nature, I have never ceased to be amazed by its complexity.......In this case......throw it in the dead case file....There can be no other reason for it to be examined except for its monetary value.

I hope and pray these allegations are false. If they are not, then Br. Ligouri should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
There can be zero tolerance for sexual misconduct.
A sad day indeed in the history of Iona College.

I amnot going to rush to judgment on this. I hope the allegations are unfounded. But if they are well founded, then I hope that the victim is justly compensated and receives a profound apology from Brother.
Regardless, the fact is that the vast majority of priests and brothers are good men. I learned a lot from them at Msgr. Farrell H.S. and at Iona College. My faith in the goodness of the vast majority of these men and my gratitude to Msgr. Farrell HS and Iona College remains steadfast.
