I was at the 82-37 loss to DePaul at the old MSG on 51st St. There many maroon beret clad Iona students behind the basket. The game got away fast and the excitement of playing in the Garden quickly diminished. The beer took over and, in hopes of getting a rally going, the entire student section turned to singing Latin hymns. It didn't do much good. Coach Meyer of Depaul had a heck of a team. We were no match. I recall another game at MSG in those days against Duquesne and Willie Somerset. No luck that time either.
I'm a basketball historian and trying to bone up on my Iona history. I'm one of the heads of a project to compile the stats of every D-I school from the 1940s on. Right now I'm working on Iona and I've learned it's hard to find information about a few of the McDermott teams.
Just a brief update. I spent most of last night looking at boxscores from 1963-64. I'm still missing one boxscore, but I think we'll have full stats for that season, such as they (field goals made, free throw made/attempted, points).
Warren Isaac seems to have been a good player. I'm looking at one boxscore in which he scored 32 of Iona's 81 points in a 1-point win over Boston. Isaac was also in the top ten for rebounds in the country, I believe. I hope that he's not forgotten?
Anyway, I'm working on 1965-66 now, but I'm missing a lot of boxscores. I guess the newspaper did not have as much interest in the Gaels that year. Makes sense. One of the boxscores I have was a not-so-great 82-37 loss to DePaul. Hopefully I can find more 1965-66 boxscores. If anybody has leads on the season stats in totality, please speak up of course
Warren Isaac has not been forgotten. His senior year (1964–65) Isaac averaged 25.2 points and 20.9 rebounds per game, which ranked him 13th and second in the country, respectively. The numbers he put up over his time at Iona are amazing considering his team was not very deep in supporting talent and the fact that he recorded those numbers in only three years.
cpman6, we had games at MSG (vs. Duquense)in two consecutive years, and lost, 74-57, in January of '66. However, the prior year, January of '65, we beat them, 63-61. Warren Isaacs scored 30, including the winning shot at the buzzer. The picture of the winning shot, I believe, was on the back page of the Daily News. I was at that game, and the DePaul game. And while I don't remember the game, I see we lost to the Dukes,114-107, in 1991. Anyone remember that game? The record book (Iona's) is confusing. It shows Isaac with 41 vs Duquense on 2/17/65 and 30 on 1/17/65. Is that possible?

I think they're both wrong.
On January 7, 1965, Isaac scored 30 points, included a 40-foot heave at the buzzer, to beat Duquesne and Willie Somerset 63-61. Good memory, ic59! Better memory than the Iona record book.
The game was part of a Garden doubleheader with Davidson-NYU (Davidson won 82-73).
Sometimes teams played twice in the regular season (and teams still do), but it doesn't look like the Gaels played Duquesne twice in 1964-65. Not on 1/17/65 and 2/17/65 anyway. Iona beat Bridgeport on 2/17/65. The Gaels did not play on 1/17/65 as far as I can tell.

The 91 game was the first game of a doubleheader between St. Johns and Uconn. I remember because I went with a friend of mine that was a Uconn fan. Just remember the ridiculous high score and not much else.

I was definitely wrong about the Duquesne game. I remember that Daily News picture of Warren Issac scoring. Thanks for setting me straight.
Oh, actually when I was talking about "wrong" I was pointing the finger at that Iona record book. Your memory of him hitting a game winner was spot on.

I was at that game at MSG, and that was no heave by Warren. Warren held the ball on the perimeter, and dribbled in place as the clock wound down to about one second with the score tied. The Dukes did not come out on him, so he literally stood there (about 20 or so feet from the basket) dribbling the ball in his unique behind-the-back style. He then turned and drilled the shot with about a second - all net, with the Daily News photo showing the shot going in with "00" on the clock. I don't remember how long he stood there, but I do remember thinking "What the ***k are you doing?"
Come to think of it, that was the joebird special that joebird did not get to see (evidently??).

Nope, before my time. Under my unofficial buzzer beater rules, the tie score at the time of the shot would not qualify it for a true (game saving) buzzer beater. We have had an occasional tiebreak winner: Gary Springer Sr, John McDonald, Greg Jenkins, likely a couple of others, but its been several years since even one of these. Unofficially we are 0 for our last 93 when taking a buzzer shot to win the game when trailing.
We were in a Syracuse bar after a game in the old Carrier Classic where we had just lost to the Orange with Ruland getting in foul trouble against Roosevelt Bouie within a few minutes. An agitated Jimmy V walked in with Pat Kennedy. I started buying tequila shots on my Amex card while V railed on about the home job. Pretty soon we were all well-toasted. I ended up passing out. V ended up buying a few rounds for the whole bar on me. V and Pat could party with anyone when they had the inclination.
Also Kennedy vs Tom Penders were some of the most intense BBall moments of my life. Remember the brawl at Mulcahy's?

It's bizarre that the NY Times would say Isaac heaved the ball 40 feet. I believe your account and it's actually more interesting and intriguing. So he must have planned to take that shot and knew he could make it. That's guts.

Just an aside about Pat Kennedy. I read he's coaching at Division II Pace now. He hasn't had a winning season since 1999.
The oldtimers may remember the game against Dayton in the Garden in the 50's. What was significant was the fact that Dayton was the tallest team in collegiate history up to that time. There was 7' Bill Uhl and a couple of 6'9" forwards. Dayton was winning handily until towards the end of the game Andy Risoli (one of the smallest Gaels) was told to drive to the basket for all he was worth, dodging the Dayton trees. I think Andy got something like 14 points in a hurry. Dayton won by four, but it was exciting. The game was written up in Sports Illustrated.
