Kennedy also lived to his mid-90's. Does anyone remember that great Iona HS Basketball Tournament that I mentioned earlier? Great venue, better than the City Championship as some outside schools were invited. Had to be a great exposure for players and McDermott probably recruited a lot of athletes who played.
Problem with playing the best today ( which I really would like to see ) is that any money made doesn't go to the Basketball Program or even Athletics but to the Development Office. Think it's the same with Iona. If anyone knows please inform. So if St. Peter's was to travel to play Duke (they'd kill us but our lifetime record is 2-0 ) the percentage of the gate never would go to Athletics which desperately needs the money. Budgets of the minor sports are constantly cut and Coaches are expected to do fun raising. Same is true at Iona...a shame!

Jazzlin, I'm from NJ and I remembered reading your golf appointment in the Record. I followed your team through snippets in the paper. I was interested partly because a friend of mine was the golf coach at FDU. like our oldtimer I have enjoyed your posts. But it has been a while since I've been to the board.

Thanks epatrick. My team (hopefully) will be quite strong this year as I graduated no players. My former Captain/Assistant will bring many Golf Championships to Iona. You guys have several natural advantages over us. He is in the process of building an outstanding Program at Iona. Hopefully (just kidding) not this year.

jazzlin, you mentioned Coach Kennedy's summer camp, Camp Regis, and I'm wondering if it still exists? I know that both McDermott (LaSalle) and Kennedy (Regis) coached at NYC high schools, before Iona and St. Peter's. The reason I ask is that my son-in-law is a basketball junkie and a Regis grad, and I'd love to tell him about Camp Regis.

ic59...here is what little I know. Camp Regis is long gone. It was located on a relatively small piece of property in the Hamptons ( wonder what the property is worth now). Coach told me that it was located next to a large piece of land owned by the WR Grace Line. Grace or whoever was the CEO was an Irish guy and a big basketball fan would let the players at Camp Regis use his property for their cross country exercise runs.
Regarding Regis High School. One of my closest friends ( name Heffernan ) had two boys who played at Regis and went on to be the head "ball boys" for Jim O'brien when he was the head coach at Boston College. As you know O'Brien was an outstanding College Coach both at BC and Ohio State. Would up taking both to court and winning both cases. However,it ruined his Coaching career. According to my friend O'Brien was a good guy who got screwed around by both schools.
Getting back to Regis, Kennedy, last year, was inducted into the NYC Basketball Hall of Fame. There is a video of his son, George, speech somewhere on the St. Peter's website. Regis, I know, did a big story in their newspaper on Kennedy's history of coaching at Regis. Your son-in-law might want to check out the school's newspaper archives. Interestingly, Kenney was supposed to have coached two high schools at the same time. At Regis, I think 1948 , was supposed to have won the National High School Basketball Championship. His teams were that good! All I can tell you was that, like McDermott, Kennedy was a great guy. All of us had a lot of respect for him.

Jazzlin, Coach Kennedy coached my father-in-law, the late Jack Rooney and his identical twin, Gerry Rooney, who were two first-team all NYC high school players on the 1948 Regis City championship team. I had the fortune of meeting Coach Kennedy several times, he was a great guy and I played in the Iona program at the end of Coach McDermott's era. Thanks to the effort of his son George, Coach McDermott, JB and Coach Kennedy would get together, well into their late 80's and play 9 holes together! As George said, "they must have been the slowest foursome in the world" but the three of them enjoyed each others company and the stories were fantastic. By the way, Kennedy did coach two boys high school basketball teams at the same time and according to the NY papers the 1948 team did win the national championship, including the Catholic High School Championships which included schools from around the country held in Rhode Island in 48. Jack Rooney was named MVP at that tourney and his twin was Gerry was the MVP in 47'. Both twins went on to star at Fordham playing for future NBA head coach Johnny Bach. Thanks for bringing back great memories of great people!

hurtinturkey...thanks for backing up my recollections. You, no doubt, have more inside information than I do. Here is the rest that I remember:
1) Pretty sure that Coach, who graduated from the Savage School of Phys. Education, told me that he was on the same baseball team as Lou Geherig (sp). I know that Lou went to Columbia but the Savage School had an outstanding repution and perhaps Lou began there.
2) My high school team in 1961 also played in that RhodeIsland Tournament in 1961. It was called the ESCIT....Eastern States Tournament.
3) Kennedy looked like a big bear but had a heart of gold. Like McDermott was both AD and basketball coach. He was, by the way, a basketball genius, way ahead of his time with the fast break. His "68 team averaged, I believe , 97 points per game. Remember that Siena was a mediocre D2 team then but Canisius was very good in the 50's.
4) Your father-in-law was mentioned in several of the Regis articles I read and is spoken about in the Regis archives.
5) After graduation played some golf with Coach. He, while driving, flipped a golf cart on a hillside and almost killed both of us...scary!
6) Life moves on but I did love those old MSG College Basketball games when College Basketball was so much bigger than Pro Ball.
Enjoyed you memories also!

Can we really discuss Iona basketball history and leave out all of the racism allegations, vacated wins, and general corruption?

We've been over this Billy. You don't care because you believe in a type of liberalism that would appall a fine man like OT. Your liberalism has poisoned your sense of morality and as such, you employ the same "win at all costs" philosophy that I86 (and occasionally Guy) touts year round. Your take on gun control would bring tears of sorrow to OT's eyes. Sent from my ASUS PadFone X using proboards
