I have been reading a lot about Towson University team which was 1-31 two years ago, 18-13 last year and being touted as a team to watch this season...I searched their basketball site out of curiosity...What caught my eye was their new Basketball Arena...It looks liked it was designed perfectly as a IONA dream house...It has a capacity of 5,200 with every seat having a clear view...It was built with an eye on its use for municipal purposes also...I know nothing about designing or cost, but I would urge those at IONA responsible for IONA's future expansion plans to take a look at what would suit are purpose for years to come and match our basketball ambitions................Towson is located just outside Baltimore...I don't know how to transfer sites directly, but Google will do by using TOWSON ARENA....

Got to think such a place for us is in at least the $50-$60 million range, if built from scratch. That's a lot of scratch!!!
I think we should keep an eye on the Yankees-Manchester City team that will start play in 2015 in MLS. They may be looking at the Bronx-Westchester as a site for a soccer specific stadium for NYC FC. Maybe they can build a 5,000 seat hoops arena ajacent for Iona, Manhattan, the entire Bronx/Westchester HS community to use, also for attractions like Ice Capades, Harlem Globetrotters, the Wiggles/Barney/Sesame Street live, etc. Maybe even some indoor tennis.

Also OT, Towson is a Public University with over 20,000 students. Tough comparison.

Nice arena though. I think we should look at something like the DeVos Fieldhouse at Hope College in Holland, MI. It cost $22 Million in 2005, has a capacity of 3,400 that could easily be raised to 4,000. To make the costs more palatable we should pursue "green" technologies such as using natural light, solar power etc... to reduce operating costs, get some publicity for the schools efforts, receive some assistance from the green technology manufacturers to showcase their products and obtain the federal tax credits. This could be a test run for larger scale "Green" arenas in the future.

It can't be on the main campus with residential zoning prohibiting any building above 3 stories.
The only available land I could think of in New Rochelle that would raise the least amount of stink with the residents is Davids Island - a former Army base, 78 acres of neglected and deteriorated land uninhabited since the mid 1960's.
New Rochelle has been trying to figure out what to do with this property for nearly 50 years. A total shame. The roadblock to development has been access. With no bridge, the only way to get there is a very short ferry ride.
Just as Iona did with New Rochelle and the Thomas Paine institute, why not have a discussion on Davis Island.

FYI, from the Iona Twitter feed courtesy of GuyF. Anyone know what the "arena" reference means?
Iona's Board has approved a new business school, expanded & renovated science building and arena, new performing arts school & resid. Hall

Nyre is very sharp, and very ambitious. He's done a great job so far for the college, and a think the best is on its way.
I read the college's twitter feed. It appears that we can expect to see an expanded and renovated arena, in addition to a new residence hall, new home for the business school. expanded science facilities, etc. This will be a huge campaign.
Very exciting news.
