If they're quality OOC games I'm all for it. Not interested in playing Niagara in front of an empty arena as the credits scroll after the main event is over.

I agree, but if we could ever play 2 dblhdrs against bcs teams there it would help and probably even get us in the news, like cluess said nothing better for college kids than to play at msg, even coach k said that everything sounds different and better!!

Finances are an issue with this--you don't just show up and play a BCS team.

I will disagree with those who say that a facilities upgrade or new arena isn't necessary. Don't think we will fade into oblivion or all of a sudden become St Peter's north, but I do think we will start to see Iona miss out on prospects to other MAAC foes on a more regular basis, and to opponents that we previously shredded in the recruiting wars. On a one-off basis this might not have a drastic impact, but it will only accumulate in time and put us in a position where we find ourselves playing second fiddle in the conference a few years from now. We need to acknowledge we have an issue and be pre-emptive about addressing it. This might be a cold shower for some, but this is fact. In some instances our staff is forced to avoid showing recruits our locker rooms or weight lifting lounge, and in other cases they have to make up excuses as to why top-tier recruits we're pursuing "can't" attend mid-week games against bottom feeder teams. The former is an indictment on our facilities and the latter on our fan support. The staff deserves better. Anybody in the college coaching business will tell you that recruiting is about facilities, facilities, facilities. It's a miracle that our staff has been able to bring the level of talent to New Rochelle that they have been. And the fact that they have been punching above their weight since TC arrived on campus is NOT an excuse to say let's proceed with the status quo and ignore the need for a new facility. That kind of hubris is exactly what will make us lose relevancy in the matter of years. Great post iona05! We will know more about the plan within the next 8-10 weeks. Fans will definitely have to pony up--but should if they want the facilities to happen. Guys-- ask for a tour of our current "back-office" facilities. Look at the locker room; video room; weight room; coach's office. If you're a recruit--ask yourself the question!

Super, there are teams that want to play in NYC, Duke makes it a point for recruiting, we can probably get some former big east teams to play us there, We had more people at the iona/nc game with manhattan/ GTECH? than st johns gets. I would rather pay to upgrade our facilities besides the gym and pay to play in the big arenas and pay big teams, we will never sell out a 4,000 arena against an A10 team

I would add that the College cannot ignore the elephant in the room on this either - the direction NCAA basketball may be headed with the BCS schools posturing to squeeze out the mid-majors to keep every dollar for themselves. If the mid-majors were to be relegated to D1-AA status as in football, the economics will change drastically. A path to the NCAA tournament is a required lifeline to keep theses conferences afloat. Removing that would be catastrophic. I'm all for improving the facilities and will support it as much as I can, but the school IMO has a tough decision in front of itself - does it sink $20 million into a HAC remake only to find itself on the outside looking in?

Back in the old days, when we use to draw 3200 (aprox) fans to a game, we had standing room only by adding a first game of very strong HS teams. I remember a Mt. Vernon-Scarsdale game, when both were great HS teams. But something tells me, college teams can no longer do that. Am I correct? Because if I'm not, then we could fill up a 4K facility, with an A10 team and a HS prelim.

Have to say outside of my family and my work there are few things I love more than Iona basketball. Been a thirty year love affair since I was a student. But if we fail to improve our facilities in a significant way that to me means we are not going to grow and we'll basically tread water. I'll try to stay invested, but if I feel like the administration is not invested, don't know how much longer I'll be.

And honestly it's not the admin, but the alumni and fans that need to be invested. $$$$
