I would love to see some large photo murals on those plain bare, maroon walls in Hynes... Ruland, Vickers, Hamilton, Hargraves, Grimes, Kirksay, Green, Coleman, Hameed, Larsen, Burtt X2, Springer, Timinskas, Soliver, Machado, Glover, Momo...

How about a color mural .... something like this, so the gym looks like it holds more people?
A man with a lot of heart. He has his negatives but the majority of Iona's success is linked to him. It's time to give him a Richie Gurein like tribute.

FYI, radio interview w/Big Jeff. Has some interesting soundbytes on his Iona days, point shaving rumors, Bro Liguori scandal, etc: Quote
Just spent a half hour listening to one of the best sport interviews ever........ The interviewer was terrific, and Jeff was his usually 'Tell it like it is' self... Be prepared for some ''Did he really say that'' moments....
It will answer a lot of question you might have about Big Jeff, from his youth, Iona days, Pro life, coaching adventure and the Washington DC debacle to what he looks forward to....
It can be found in the 'Big Jeff'' thread...I am not computer knowledgeable enough to give direct access, but I am sure it was a 05 post....

If you are a Iona basketball fan, don't miss it.
I had listened off of 05's address. Direct as usual. Calls it as he sees it. Great listen.
Great interview. Actually forgot how great of a pro he was. Best line was when he told Orlando Woolridge "to walk away before he was in worse shape than Jordan", after he blocked Jordan's dunk attempt and put him on his back, and ended it with that grunting type laugh.
I book marked it not knowing Jeff as some of you guys do. But I do remember all of those great games he talked about.
All were cowm jewel moments in our rich tradition as Bill said.
He was a factor if not the factor in each game.
I agree with EPat that it is time to hang 43 next to Guerin. Guerinize him. The last game of the year at home vs Manhattan would be the perfect venue.
Time to put the past behind us and celebrate arguably the best player in Iona history.
SID any chance of making this happen and bringing Big full circle?
05 many thanks for the link.
I think Ruland is the one who needs to put the past behind him. Once again, he takes every opportunity to rip his former school, bringing up point shaving allegations and claiming he was fired due to "racism", rather than 4 losing seasons in 6 years, capped off by a 2-28 record (none of which was HIS fault, of course). He seems to have quite the "victim" mentality. Nothing is EVER his fault, and he is always being "wronged" by somebody. (Valvano, teammates, Larry Fleischer, Agent he signed with, All Star coach for giving him "only" 13 minutes, Iona "racism" and unfair treatment, UDC lies and unfair treatment, luggage cart guy for "assaulting" him and ending his career (again), NBA coaches for not giving him an assistant job because, "you have to know somebody"., etc.)
Iona would be INSANE to honor Ruland while he continues to make false and distorted derogatory comments about the school. When he makes a public apology for defaming the school, its alumni and the Goal Club members, maybe then the school could honor him.
gaelman you make good points against honoring him, but I think the school and program should quietly reach out to start the process of reconciliation. Attempts to reach out to all former players should be done. Time to move forward and also look back at the same time.

I have to agree with Gaelman 100%. At about the 49-minute mark Jeff laments his inability to get another coaching job because of the power (my word) Iona has over all of college basketball. His exact words were "Iona doesn't seem to let go."
POT. KETTLE. BLACK.
No Jeff, you are the one who can't let it go - and that is probably a BIG reason why you can't get another NCAA job. No school wants to take a chance on hiring you and then have to face you running down the school when things don't go your way.
