When I read the title of this thread I thought it was about Bow Flex It might as well have been, CtBill, since all this palaver about upgrading our facility is likely an "exercise" in futility.

In my 14 years involved at IONA I've been to ZERO baseball games. Why? I have no idea where the hell they play....and that's a problem. Gailoarsmen The well kept mysterious Iona baseball program continues...It without doubt the worst in the nation...When I was able, I attended as a baseball lover a few of their games at Salesian...I was often the only spectator...In the past 10 years I am sure they have won no more then 10 percent of their games if that...I am equally sure my High School team of years ago would trounce them... [quote/]Any questions about this dismal program will not be answered...They seem to have complete immunity and go about their business as usual...If one was to attend one of their games they would walk away embarrassed and in wonder why the program is allowed its shameful ways...If there is, please respond......I will stand by my thoughts....Over 95 percent of students do not know there is a baseball team, care less, or that they now play on a new city field 10 minute walk away...Shut it down and use the dough towards a new field house that will properly represent the college......I rave, but I am sure their sandlot game will continue... [/quote] I'm not one to hate on any program considering I coach the IONA men's crew. I think there was one year when I was a student (over ten years ago) the baseball team produced a solid season but couldn't build on it. Having rowed when the men's team was a club the team was better known for its parties than victories on the water. The image if the team has changed and with our indoor rowing tank the team is more visible to the general population than ever. Two years ago we medaled at our national championships with little to no fanfare. The challenge lies in our women's program. New rules (similar to basketball) award the winner of the conference to an automatic bit to the NCAA regatta (rowing is not a men's NCAA sport). Previously a women's team had to be invited to race at NCAA. But now small conferences like the MAAC can get in. So lots of ADs across the country started to commit to women's crew by either starting up new programs (canisius) or providing several scholarships (Fairfield). Our team, like several others I'm sure, haven't had that support and as a result we are getting left behind in the MAAC. Hopefully until that day comes the strategy to being competitive is to work with what we have, get them insanely fit and give it hell!

The Baseball team has never recovered from losing scholarships in 2003 when the hockey team and tennis teams were dropped. If I recall, baseball came close to being dropped as well. The couple of scholarships they lost could have been divvied up among four or five players who could have kept the team at a competitive level.
As much as it pains me, it might be time to let the baseball team go the way of the football team - if you are not going to make a commitment to it financially, then reallocate the funding into facilities.

Toss baseball and give me Lacrosse.

I got the $40 million; just not sure what I'm gonna do with it yet. I might buy an island.

05, I have never been to Hynes, but is there enough room for 360 degree seating? Based on what I remember from watching on TV, it might be a pretty tight squeeze.

They would have to turn the court to run East/West within the current footprint. Even then, there would likely be a need to break a wall or two to make it fit.

I heard recently from someone in the college's administration that an upgrade that involves turning the court and adding wraparound seating is the goal. Let's see whether we get there in the next capital campaign. Nyre appreciates basketball and what the program can do for the school.
