greg, and the reward for the NIT would be playing St. Chicken, if it was say Alabama I don't know if anyone in nyc would care. also it wouldn't help if st johns made the ncaa's and we were in the NIT Fair enough. I would agree.

My brother had a theory in his single days that five 2s equal a 10. That math checks out for me

Sorry, I posted about this on the Iona ranked thread , I believe. Wasn't aware of the contents of this thread. Love the St. Chicken thing. I think it's hilarious. How many NCAA's has Iona been to in the last 20 years? Whatever the figure is, though, I know it is very good for a mid major. I wouldn't characterize it as being way more than St. John's though. St. John's has been to five.

And by my count 1 more time than St. Chicken so you are right that is not way more. Just 17% more.

Was just about to post the exact same figures but you got it ahead of me. So one would prefer top be a very good team in a mid major league then a lousy team in a high major league. It's been tough but it has been interesting at least since Lavin was hired. At least he can recruit.

The New York City's sport press in its zeal to find a city team they can promote into the NCAA Tourney has reached desperation...All others have all eliminated themselves so their last hope is St. John's who are 15-9 overall, 5-6 in conference...Most of their wins were over early season patsy's and at home...Their one shining star was a recent win against over rated Creighton...That was enough in their minds to raise their stature and qualify them for the tourney over at least a dozen borderline schools with better credentials...They have about a half a dozen or so games left with more losses looming... If the Johnies can reach the 20 win mark they should have some ''consideration'', but if not there still will be drums beating for their selection...They don't realize that outside N.Y.City there is a generation that knows little of their past glory or could care less.......

Can really feel OT's dislike sometimes! Don't worry OT, SJU's chances of being selected are still very slim, although they are now in the RPI 50's and are at 16-9 and 6-6. They played awfully last night but that may have just been a temporary setback in their play. We were lucky to get the win. But we would have to keep dodging bullets for the rest of the season to make it. The only other chance would be to win the conference tourney. That would be really tough since we would have to beat a great Creighton team (and they are great, I don't know how many times you have seen them) and also Nova (#6 RPI). Plus another good middle of the pack team the first day. And that's only if they escape the PIG round. (seeds 7-10). We could afford to go 4-2 the rest of the way if one of the four wins was against Nova. And have a decent showing in the Garden. That would give us two quality wins and we would at least have a chance. Don't mean to worry you though.

It would be great for the local basketball scene. I'm just frustrated that the Johnnies have refused to schedule us...to compete with us...when we were at or better than their level at the time. How many great games have we missed? I feel the same way about the Fordham series too.

Yeah St. John's and Fordham have been ducking us for a while. St. John's has to play Fordham because they have a long standing rivalry and SJ's would have no cover ducking them. Same with Fordham and Manhattan. The Rams couldn't possibly explain ducking the Jaspers. But both can duck us claiming there is no real, long standing rivalry, which is more true for St. John's than Fordham. Thing is this approach hasn't really helped either team, nor hurt us. Its a shame that schools are afraid of competition and its really counter-intuitive. I think competition against us would actually HELP both of those schools, although SJs needs it less than Fordham does.
A while back a guy on the Fordham board said there is nothing to gain playing Iona. He actually seemed to believe this. When I saw it, I'm thinking we have the best RPI in the area, along with St. John's over the past five years, perhaps 150 points better than Fordham. Two years ago we had a 40 rpi team that got an at-large bid to the NCAA tourney and apparently they would have "nothing to gain playing us." Typically schools say this about local rivals in lower conferences who are not as good as they are - then it makes some sense. A 250 RPI team playing a 40 RPI team and you have nothing to gain? That's simply code for we don't want to get exposed as not being very good. Now this team that has nothing to gain by playing Iona has schedule this year, St. Francis of PA, Sacred Heart, Lehigh, Monmouth, Siena, and Loyola-Chicago. Currently they are something like 2-8 in conference and 9-15 overall. Playing better teams early on might have helped, but get this, they actually PURPOSEFULLY scheduled a bunch of "cupcakes" in their words, so that their team could learn how to win. You can't make this stuff up. It goes along with the North Korea like propaganda the program spews, buying time on SNY and hiring a coach who schmoozes everybody. One of their posters a while back wanted to know why they scheduled the game against Colgate on the road, as if they are Syracuse and should be playing all these cupcakes at home. The dysfunctional approach right now appears to be let's act like a big time program, even though we're not, and maybe the unsophisticated and those not paying attention won't notice. Its bizarre. Here's an idea. Why don't you play the best local teams you can and create a rivaly, thus creating more buzz for your program? I know why, we're afraid we will lose alot.
Like I've said time and again, its counter-intuitive, but rivalries HELP your program. MLS added a second team in NY. They did so to create a rivalry in the Big Apple, create buzz and intensity.
BTW, I hope we do a great job upgrading Hynes and I hope the Jaspers upgrade Draddy and we spend the next decade knocking each other silly. The rivalry with Manhattan is already recognized as the best in NYC.

If we make the tourney and st chicken does as well the ny media won't even mention us unless we win, doesn't help us at all.

Man, their board sounds like fans of a losing team. Thank goodness it's been awhile for us. That's what fans do.. Look at all the "stuff" on our board and we are having a great conference season.
