Still haven't given up on Sledge. Me either, but the Coach yells at him 3 minutes into the game in 90% of the games he plays and we don't see him again. OT I didn't say dog house. The above is what I posted. Coach obviously was unhappy with the way Tavon played while on the court. I don't know if it's positioning, not following the plays or what.

Iona has won the MAAC tourney one time the past 3 seasons and Sledge was the starting PG last year for the end of year winning streak and MAAC championship. Not saying he was better than Machado and Momo but IMO can play a big role next year whether as a starter or the backup PG. The Gaels have a chance to be really good again next year with the core of IW, AJ, DL and Amayo. Yes I am a Sledge fan and I believe he has a role next season. Impossible so early to even consider a rotation with 3 open ships. we all know TC and staff will surprise us on who they recruit.

If it has something to do with practice habits that we as fans don't see I hope Sledge can work this out and make the most of his SR season.

It can't be practice only if it happens during games.

Young might break records for offensive fouls

It appears to be an issue of his not rotating to help or switching fast enough. He has to improve his defense. I feel that is what kept Gomez off the court also. Everyone on the floor has to commit otherwise the others' efforts are undermined. Can become a problem when players ease up because they know one of their teammates is not hustling. Coach Cluess certainly does not seem to tolerate the defensive or offensive lapses unless you are one of the top dogs (this year Sean or AJ). He is trying to establish firm expectations as that will ultimately lead to improved and consistent play. Good defense will help carry the water when the shots are not falling.

Chels......I never mentioned your name with reference to ''Dog House'' and there were so many post that used that term, I had nobody in particular in mind...One wish I have is,--A understanding any criticism or views I might express are of sport nature, I would hope never to stray into the personnel realm.....My combative sport type opinions and attitude goes back a long ways to when we called players ''Bums'' one day and ''Cheered'' them the next...We were not so ''Soft Skinned'' in those days.....

OT, My post wasn't to insinuate your pointing to me, it was to get your opinion on why TS is getting yanked from the game and yelled at all the time. As always, Chels

As usual, I don't think we know everything. could also have something to do with injuries and conditioning - he was injured early in the year. I will say from what I see on the court, TC does seem to have little patience with him.

This thread brings to mind something that all who have devoted their time to Coaching a little league or some sport have great familiarity with..........
Parents think their child is not getting enough playing time, and that he/she is as good or better then those that do...The Coach tries to be as diplomatic as he can be without further straining the situation...Saying the truth that ''He\she'' is simply not as good as the others is a no/no in this age of soon to be no score sports...
Can the answer to the Sledge problem be, that Coach Cluess who has had much experience, and is paid well to put out a winning team thinks that Sledge is simply not up to HIS effort to accomplish it.........

I think coaches have a certain type of player in mind at certain positions. I don't think Sledge fits the Cluess model at all. He is not a plus defender, doesn't shoot well enough to keep defenses honest, isn't a finisher in traffic, not decisive in his passing. In the Frank Morris system Frankie Alagia was the prototype. For TC, Gil Montalvo at St. Mary's and then Post were perfect for his system. Then Machado at Iona. The exceptions to the model have been guys that could score, Momo being a recent example, but others at St. Agnes and St. Mary's. But usually high assist to turnover ratio, good enough three point shooters, either good on ball defenders or someone that anticipates well and gets in passing lanes.
Sledge is a plus athlete. To see more minutes I think he really has to improve his shooting but also his understanding of who to get the ball to and when and I think that's a tough task for a player who has relied on his athletic ability to get to this level.

On this board we have been able to keep the focus off individual players. Let's end this overanalysis of a really good kid who is enjoying his Iona experience.
