From manhattan board:
Per Collin Sherwin of SB Nation:
OK, panic: Sources tell me Masiello is NOT a done deal for USF. The terms “chaos” and “holding pattern” got used.

Here's a name not being mentioned that might be worth looking at for the manhattan opening:
Mike Rice

So does he go back to Manhattan? linkSouth Florida has rescinded a five-year offer to Manhattan's Steve Masiello to become their next coach after a search firm found a previously undetected discrepancy in his background check, The Tampa Tribune has reported, citing a source close to the search. Masiello, 36, regarded by many as one of the top young coaches in the country, had agreed to the deal leaving only financial details to be worked out, according to The Tribune. The newspaper reported the contract was believed to be worth more than $1 million per season. It wasn't clear if Masiello was eligible to return to Manhattan in the wake of the deal falling through or what it was specifically that Eastman & Beaudine, a Texas-based search firm, found in the background check.

Hilarious comments on ESPN site:
From the university that previously gave the world Fran Fraschilla and Bobby Gonzalez, this should come as no shock.
"played at Kentucky" is also a little misleading. 7 for 37 from the field over 3 seasons
Also, Tampa Tribune story includes:
The search is back on, and USF must turn to other candidates. Possibilities include University of Florida assistant coach John Pelphrey or Louisiana Tech head coach Mike White, whose team faces Florida State tonight for a spot in the National Invitation Tournament final four in New York

Wow well all I have to say is that this news is all over every news outlet. I flip to yahoo it pops up, I flip to ESPN it pops up as well and lastly the fox news website had it as a link this morning. God this is not the publicity that Manhattan College really wanted.

I can see Manhattan taking him back, he did get results for them. They can cover their embarrassment by taking the high road:
As a College founded by Christian Brothers, Manhattan College has always sought to live by the Catholic Church's teaching on forgiveness. Steve made a mistake, but is a good coach, a good leader and a good man, one deserving if forgiveness. Therefore, Manhattan College, after careful consideration, has decided to sign Coach Massiello to a 3 year extension. Coach Massiello will also complete his remaining degree requirements.
That should tie it up neatly. Until he leaves next year.

Don't mean to pile on Mass 83 but how can Manhattan possibly take him back? Notre Dame dropped O'Leary for essentially the same issue. Very embarrassing for both Mass and the Jaspers who didn't do their home work on him. Don't forget how he lied while walking out the door saying how committed he was and then said good-bye to his players. Time for the Jaspers to close the door on him and get another up and coming young coach. I would not feel sorry for Mass at all. He knew what he was doing. Pitino is a low life.

After the newspaper, "This is where I want to be..." story and two days later interviewing at USF, now no degree, I just can't see Manhattan wanting this guy back.
