I think our baseball team is finally at the point where we need to cut it because it is a financial disaster and waste. Over the weekend the baseball team lost to William & Mary 31-1. I repeat 31-1, yes you heard that right. In baseball that is uncommon and is just a mockery. Our record so far this year is 2-11 but the last 5 Years has been pitiful.
2012-2013: 8-43 2011-2012: 21-33 2010-2011: 10-48 2009-2010: 9-41 2008-2009: 5-46-1
It's a sore eye of our athletic program and needs to be cut or rebuilt asap. The coach needs to go and the program needs to rebuilt from the ground up if we don't cut it. Something needs to happen because getting beat 31-1 is just a joke.

Gordan4mvp.......I have blasted the dismal Iona Baseball program for several years...It has gotten progressively worst, if that was possible...It has become evident to me at least that for some unknown reason a ''Sacred Cow'' program that will not, or cannot be touched....
That last score was a disgrace (31-1) to Iona Sports and to all that contribute to its horrible being...
Once again a ''Voice in the wilderness'' plea.....Shut it down and end the Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde dark cloud relationship that exists between the well run Basketball and that of the dismal Baseball program.......The money can be usefully used elsewhere and not be wasted on utter failure.......

But it has been touched - that is why the program has done so badly. When the hockey team and the tennis teams were jettisoned back in 2003, the baseball team lost four scholarships, IIRC. The result was probably the loss of on anywhere from 4-8 ballplayers because I would guess the coaching staff would divide up the funds to getthe best bag for the buck. By the way, back in 2003 one of the proposals that was discussed was the dropping of the baseball program, but the powers-that-be decided to get rid of the above mentioned teams.

The College should ask Mo to manage the team. He might do it for $1. Could you imagine the recruting for pitchers? Mariano Rivera would like to talk to you about Iona College Baseball.

Our one bright note for this season was the two hit shutout thrown by Mariano Rivera, Jr. against Fairfield.

Something to consider...Iona's 2-11 record has them sitting 7th in MAAC standings. Only Canisius has a winning record (15-7). 2nd place Monmouth is 6-11. Baseball doesn't happen in the northeast. Have to think hockey is a more natural fit for the area.

It's embarrassing for the school located where we are to have a program ( please excuse the term ) like this one which is clearly designed to fail in order to make the decision easier next time around when the school wants to cut costs.

I have to disagree with some of the statements on here about baseball in this region. This year baseball has been bad but you have some bright spots IE Seton Hall, St.Johns, Cansisus, Stony Brook and UConn. Usually this area has some good players and some decent teams but the weather this year really affected all teams. For Observer2 to make a comment about baseball in this region is a failure than you have to be a moron. I don't think you remember 2 years ago when Stony Brook (Yes that's right) Stony Brook made it to the college world series with all new York kids. My point at the beginning of this thread wasn't to degrade baseball in the region, my point was to reconsider the baseball team at iona.

Moron here, my statement was meant to say in a region where there are much better programs in comparison to ours. So I think my brevity screwed up the message I was trying to make. Who doesn't know about the area programs you brought up.
I'm just pissed at Iona's baseball program and I have expressed hat to several our former ADs.

I completely agree with your points on our program. It's so bad and time to get rid of the program. One big waste of money. I've expressed my displeasure as well especially about the head coach who is currently running the program but no change has been made.

HAHAHA lets make this clear real fast, his son is only getting interest because of his dad. This kid doesn't belong on a real college baseball team, he hits 85 and sits at 81-83 on the gun at best!!! He has a record of 1-3 with an ERA (Earned Run Average) close to 5 which is horrible considering the new restrictions on the bats. This happened all the time when i played, it was who you knew or whose son you were. The sad thing is that this kid will get drafted because of his father and take up a minor league spot that should go to someone with more potential. I wish the kid well but he really isn't anything close to his father or even close being a professional athlete.

So Iona's Baseball team this year finished 13-31. Guess we will continue to waste money fielding a team that hasn't changed in the last 8 years. I'm amazed at the fact that the head coach still has a job through all of this. Anyways the program speaks for itself and needs to go. Use the money appropriately.

I know the program has been in a terrible downward spiral over the last decade. I just don't think that losing alone is a good enough reason to cut the program. As Guy points out about the basketball team, Mid-Majors are cyclical in nature. Hard to keep a consistently good program. As the economy evolves, perhaps the school will be able to make more of a commitment (Maybe bring back the lost scholarships?) and they could once again be competitive. If they cut the program it will never come back. Just my two cents.
