My hope is that the posters on this board are sport and broadminded enough to understand the difference between a fine young man and any opinion I have developed as his to Basketball worth...and I issue a challenge to all to show any of my posts that might have been critical of any issue of Sledge except in that endeavor...That is A sport fans right....
I can't get comfortable with the idea of comparing 18 - 23 year old college athletes from our team with a highly paid professional baseball player. Not to put words in anyone's mouth, but I am guessing that OT did not boo anyone in a New York Giant's uniform while at the Polo Grounds.
I will never get comfortable with the idea that 18-23 are still children, and are to be hidden from life's problems they surely will meet....IMO, we the 2nd or 3rd generation are the ones who created this sheltering... Coming from age of a terrible depression followed by the horrors of WW2 we vowed that our children and grand children would never have to relive its hardships...The idea was right, but it has been taken to the extreme resulting into todays world that believes it can not happen again and are burying their heads in the sand to reality....... I have seen 17 to 23 years old youths live with reality and die with dignity, but they were thankfully better prepared to meet destiny.... Yea I know I am just an old curmudgeon left preaching to the choir, and I once booed the great Mel Ott when he was slumping, and that he played major league ball as a 17 year old (CHILD) rookie.
On a scale of 1-10, Super is a 1 on this (These are good kids, treat them like family, don't be critical) and OT is about an 8 (Be critical, the players are adults, don't pamper them). I would say that I would be a 7 on the scale. Criticism is fine, but don't be nasty. OT, you are correct about our children. Mine are in their early 20's and I spoil the heck out of them. As long as they are healthy and good people, I am happy. My dad (WWII vet) disagreed with the way we spoiled them, but I was happy to have the chance to do it.

Who is Mel Ott..Can he rebound...Quote...St. Louie Gail.....
Mel Ott played for the N.Y. Giants from the late 1920's when he was 17 years old to the early 1940's...It was the only team he ever played for...He became upon retirement its Manager...
He had the unusual habit of lifting his front foot high off the ground just before striking the ball...As a 17 year old, Mgr. John McGraw observed coaches trying to cease the habit...In one of his usual rages, he warned them if they ever again meddled with Ott's swing they would be fired... He went on to hit over 500 home runs...In my sandlot baseball days I imitated that swing with pretty good results....
Sadly just a couple of years after becoming Mgr. he was killed in a auto accident...Ott lived in the shadow of Ruth and Gerigh, but quietly created a shady place of his own...

OT-I also saw firsthand 18-30 year olds bravely defend and die for their country and our rights to express our opinions. OT--I am also a long-time Giants fan--first game at Polo Grounds August 1954!!!!
