Just remembered 6 hits in 7 at bats. There were two magic things for me about the Giants. They set a record with 221 home runs (Mize 51) in 1947. Bobby Thomson's shot heard around the world (one of those remember-where-you-were moments).

Tim Lincecum pitches 2nd no-hitter today in less than a year against Padres. Only 2nd pitcher in MLB history to no-hit the same team twice. SORRY GUY--I'll start another thread if required!

My original intention in starting this post which was suddenly interrupted was to give a brief review of my personal thoughts of few Iona coaches I have known through the years dating from 1946 to Coach Cluess...These are strictly opinions I have formed...Do to time and space it is not at this time the complete list...
Coach McDermott...A perfect man for the early demands of Iona Hoops...He knew his basketball, and kept the proper distance between his players and team discipline...His long time relationship with Iona will attest to that... A few years ago, I spotted him sitting alone at a Iona game. I climbed up and sat with him...It was the most informative 2 hours I have ever spent talking basketball...I was surprised at how sharp he was, but amazed when I later learned he was close to his 100 year...IMO he was the father of Iona basketball.....
Coach Jim Valvano...Vibrant as life itself...I often thought how well he would have fit in with our corner depression day gang...There was never a dull moment when he was around...It was often said ''He could talk the balls off a brass monkey'' His last speech given extemporaneously was arguably the greatest one of ever made by a sport figure...He had amazing ability to defuse a situation as I found out whenever he showed up when one of his players was involved...I often teased him asking if he wanted to double up with me on a busy weekend night.........He had very good baskeball knowledge and instinct...He never failed to stop at our room for B.S. session when we were away...He once said ''They gave me a lifetime contract, then told me I was going to die''.....That was Jimmie Valvano Iona's prodigal son...
Pat Kennedy....In his golden age he is back coaching local basketball...It may be Div 2, but he is back close to home...But for a demon he fought in later life, and better career decesions he might have been known as one of the better area coaches...Seldom let a game get out of control, and he was a genius in using Time Out calls to control momentum swings...You knew you were in for battle when you scheduled one of his Iona teams...I wish him well and look forward to a meeting in a pre season game to liven up the dull period we lately are saddled with...
My aide is calling me...Wheel chair ready for a nice morning ride...You look forward to small things to liven up the serene passing of time...Nearing my 90th year, I have little regrets...

Please continue later. Can't wait to hear your take on Gary Brokaw! [/quote] Greg.....Mr. Brokaw was a very sharp person who I always felt was in the wrong end of the Basketball business...He would have made a wonderful C.O. He appeared distant and you could often find him sitting alone pondering the situation...Always a gentlemen, he left me with impression that he was always ''Waiting for the train to come in'' and seldom showed the emotion of victory or defeat...... I know not where the future took him, but worry not, when he found the right road he was sure to be successful...

What about Jerry Welsh? I always thought his problem was he coached as if the 3 point shot didn't exist, especially on the defensive end.

Joebird....Keen observation...He spent many years coaching in Northern New York and the 3 point shot may not have caught up to that area...Another fine basketball mind although it might have been a little past his prime...I will not forget when his Iona team beat if memory serves, North Carolina State at Westchester County Center the ovation we gave him at a after game gathering and the smile on his face when he walked in was the deserving culmination of a fine career by a equally fine gentleman.
