I see he is listed as a 6'5'' PF. Anybody actually see this kid play? Yes many times. This kid is a stud. I thought he had the most potential of any player I saw in Rockland/Westchester/Orange even as a sophomore. Takes over games at will but he is unselfish. He can shoot, defend and rebound his ass off. Really good moves in the paint but has a soft touch when shooting. He will be an excellent MAAC level player. Here is some other reports I gave about him. I got to watch Kai Mitchell (2015) from Spring Valley play tonight against Clarkstown North. Kai is a 6'5" sophomore power forward. He is young and developing but he is going to be very good. The kid had 16 points and must have had as many rebounds and at least 5 blocked shots. The offense was not run around him but if it was he would have dropped 30. Once he learns to use his strength a bit more he is going to be amazing. Kid has a soft touch, can pass well and has a good head on his shoulders" "He was at Maroon Madness and if he keeps developing and grows a bit more he will be a hell of a mid major player. He did very well in AAU and at the Dyckman over the summer playing against players like Luis Santos (St. Rays), Jonathan Nwankwo (Monsignor Scanlan), Leroy “Truck” Fludd, Mustafa Jones (Cardinal Hayes), Desi Rodriguez (Lincoln) I really like this kid. He reminds me of Charles Barkley... undersized but strong, smart, can score and rebound. IMHO, if this kid was two inches taller he would be getting recruited by the Big East. " Here are some scouting reports about his play: Kai Mitchell – House of Sports Gauchos – A deceptively quick and elusive big man with a surprising vertical, the 6-foot-5 sophomore forward used his size, muscle and soft hands to score inside. His ability to find space and sense when to make the correct interior cut also made him an easy target for teammates looking to work the ball inside. Mitchell put up solid point totals and hit the boards with maximum effort. While rebound totals weren’t officially kept, it’s likely he averaged double-figures. When opponents did try to outmuscle him defensively, Mitchell successfully absorbed contact and got the ball over the rim. He displayed a sweet stroke from the free throw line and when he drained 10-14-footers. The few times that Mitchell did receive a pass in the post, he did well in either making a move or finding an open teammate once he was doubled." NERR Report on the Hall of Fame Spring Classic In MASS. "Kai Mitchell (6-5 forward) House of Sports Elite/Spring Valley H.S.: Standout performer who started off pool play with 23 points in first game. Strong-bodied (240 pounds) positional post with excellent hands and feet. Power finisher who can play above the rim. Showed potential touch from 15 feet that should develop. Size may be a concern, but plays like a mini DeJuan Blair. Rising junior, starting to hear from mid-major D-I's." GYMRAT Challenge Report "Minutemen got their first taste of weekday action last night after playing all their prior games on Sundays. Back at full strength after having several players missing in their last contest against Bedford Y, they played Spring Valley in the first game of a doubleheader. For a majority of the game both teams were neck and neck. Things would change a bit midway through the second half when Spring Valley went on a 12-3 run to gain a comfortable lead. Their big man Kai Mitchell was an absolute beast in the paint. Minutemen did not have an answer for him, their do-everyhting guy Benard Edwards did the best he could to try and contain him. Despite this, they climbed back in the game and with 18 seconds on the clock John Licuse (one of the key players missing in the last game) sunk two free throws to tie the game at 52 and send us into overtime. In the overtime period Spring Valley would hold the Minutemen to zero points while Mitchell would continue his dominance, leading his team to the victory and notching a game-high 25 points." Dyckman Report

While I would have preferred Mitchell to be in the class of '15, I would be a little more concerned if he decided to do a post grad year after he committed to Iona. this looks like an agreement between him and Iona with the staff knowing the plan and accepting his commitment, as both were announced at the same time. Isn't this similar to the IW situation when he committed to Iona with the understanding he would first spend a year at a JUCO?

Any commitment before you receive a signed LOI is only as good as the players word. I am not worried. I hope McGill is next.... I love both of these players games. Besides McGills aunt is way cute and would be a nice addition to scenery at Hynes. I sat and talked to her two years ago at a game.

This kid sounds like a real solid addition.
So we should expect a signed LOI from him in November 2015?
That's a ways off... let's hope he and the program stay close with one another throughout the prep year.

I've been following (only through the media) Kai and Ricky for a couple of years, and am very excited about the Commitment, but also very worried about the additional year of waiting. All along, I've been impressed by his size (6'5/6'6) and 240/250 lbs. He reminds me of Mike Glover, and if he's half as good as Mike, we'll have a very good Gael. And it looks like he'll be stepping on a refurbished HAC, when he begins his college career. The good times continue to roll!!
