What time would our game be? Before or after SJU /Duke? SJU/Duke is a 2pm start. guaranteed to be a CBS tv game, so I would think Iona/Niagara will be after, unless they start at 11am. The feature game has to be ready for tip off at 2pm Thanks Sharkey, that's what I was thinking too. A few years back we were part of doubleheader with SJU/Georgetown. I think we played the 2nd game?

The amount of complaining in this thread is surprising. Hey, why don't we just ask St Johns to step aside and let us play Duke?

The amount of complaining in this thread is surprising. Hey, why don't we just ask St Johns to step aside and let us play Duke? Good Idea! Was thinking maybe 11AM is a possibility but after Sharkey's post realize what if the game is four 4 OT's and isn't over by 2, they can't have that, so game will be 4:30 or 5. It may not be a good match up but some local media may stay and give it some coverage and I am sure the players want to get an opportunity to play on the MSG floor, even if no one is there, though not sure I want or will go.

Great media storyline possible---if we are in great shape record-wise:
Suppose we come in with 2-3 losses. Question might be raised about SJU ducking us. (Might even get Massiello to comment on that.)

A little bit of background. This is a home game for St Johns. Niagara, like St Johns is a Vincentian school, De Paul the other. Fr Jim Maher, Niagara's new president was Executive V.P. and athletic moderator at St Johns before coming to Niagara. He is a avid sports fan and has expressed full support for growing Niagara's athletic programs. It may just be he made the event possible and he approached Iona about taking advantage of the opportunity St Johns offered.

Assuming that our squad plays to its full potential, they should be able to win this game comfortably. We can also assume there will be coverage by the Daily News and NY Post; I would be very surprised if the sportswriters didn't stay for our game - Iona's style is fun to watch. If St. John's doesn't have a good showing against Duke and we do well versus Niagara, it can only be positive for our program, and maybe cause some speculation in the press about who would win a potential St. John's - Iona matchup, were it ever to take place. One never knows, there could even be a recruiting benefit to come of it. Perhaps some local hoop talent being recruited by St. John's will be at the game and get excited by Iona's uptempo, high scoring style of play. It reminds me of something that happened at Iona around 1970: my band (Penthouse West) was one of two that were playing at a mixer in Spellman Hall. The booking agency sent representatives from another school to hear the other group, The Licorice Pandowdy (with late Iona alum Bob Mayo on keyboards, who later went on to play with Peter Frampton). Lo and behold, the kids from the other school preferred my band, and to the booking agent's disbelief, we got the gig to play at their prom.

I understand it's special for the players to play at MSG, but watching this team for so many years I just can't get real excited MSG is throwing Iona a few crumbs to play an already scheduled MAAC home game there.
No offense to Niagara, but being one of, if not the strongest D1 program in the NYC metro area the last 5 years, Iona has earned every right to be playing BCS teams there.
Again, I understand from a programs standpoint you can't not accept such an opportunity, but I just feel it's time for this program to stop getting treated like a second class citizen.

Agree Iona should have the opportunity to play a BCS program at the Garden on a more steady basis because of the success of the program but I still think its a good opportunity for the players and even the fans. the game is being held the weekend between the NFL conference championships and Super Bowl and there will be plenty of media at the SJ/Duke game, that will probably stay for the Iona game if the team gets off to a fast start. good chance for much needed media coverage and try and get some recruits to the game. I for one am looking forward to going to the city for lunch and catch a college basketball doubleheader and a big Gaels victory.

Totally agree, Iona has to take the opportunity but it is disappointing that after all our success we still can't get an "up" game at the garden. I guess unless iona one day makes a big ncaa run it may never happen.

I think we're making some assumptions about our lack of opportunity to play at the Garden. Other than St John's what local team gets to play there? Fordham does very year, but only because they play SJ's in the new era Holiday Festival.

Unfortunately, MSG the self-proclaimed: "Mecca of Basketball" no longer resides in the hottest region of college hoops, which is more of a referendum on the change that's taken place in the sport the last couple of decades. Considering the record, the coaches and the players who've emerged the last 5 years, I still think this program gets short-changed in its own back yard.

The program gets more BB exposure and respect by playing KU at Allen Fieldhouse, as an example, than thumping Niagara at MSG.
