Wow. Iona must have been terrific, you guys are speechless!
Same ol same ol with Cluess, up 20 then down 1. But looking at the game on the whole, you can't be unhappy with the numbers. Though we got outrebounded by a comfortable margin, the D allowed only 42% shooting against a good, veteran team in a season opener--not bad at all. Offense was choppy but ended up being more efficient than it appeared.
Biggest gripe I have is what the hell happened to the depth we heard so much about. Only a sprinkling of Hines, Ellis and Muhammad, and no Robinson or Bebis. Granted, we can't find minutes for 12 guys every game, but shortening the rotation to 6 guys in game 1? Not good. We are deeper than that.

Tough first game opponent. Hate to see us cough up a big lead again but the team pulled it out. I agree on the short rotation, but Cleveland State as a first game may not be the best guide to how Cluess will use his players.
And it seems that we may have a real brass balled leader in Casimir, judging by the comments in the chat room. Great.

I forgot to mention that the second-half collapse was due to the defense, which otherwise played pretty well. Iona barely fouled in the second half, which means they weren't as intense or aggressive. This ties in to the smaller rotation too. Hopefully Tim takes the leash off the rest of the guys. Again, not asking for 12 deep. Play the 6 core guys and 2-3 guys should see significant minutes each night, as dictated by opponent and/or performance.

Thoughts:
Sloppy early game by both teams, we may have lost had they had their pg.
Only iona can blow a 20 point lead in a matter of minutes.
Team seems like a better defensive team but not quite as good offensively, definitely not as good of a 3 point shooting team.
Kee kee Casimar will leave iona with a lot of records, an absolute steal. Him and the big 3 are all top 10 MAAC players, didn't even appear to play his best and played well. And by the way he plays d.
Laury had an ok night but is in great shape
I love Williams game, does everything.
English an off night but still had some big shots, what a cheap foul 41 gave him, lucky he wasn't hurt.
Dublin started off well and than Cluess didn't play him much, good garbage scorer. Don't think his game is Cluess style so he will never get that many minutes. He has a huge upper body.
Amayo- a freak athlete and all around player with big size. Once he gets a month or two under his belt watch out. Really helps Gaels on d.
Ibn is a nice asset off the bench, good pg with defensive ability.
No one else played much, disappointed didn't see Hines or Ellis hit or take any 3's.
Lots of athletes on this team. Team has a lot of potential but you could see a stinker here and there, another fun year ahead with team Cluess.

Nice turnout. Good energy from the students. Blowing a 20 point lead due to poor rebounding and bad free throw shooting. But it's nice to get the opening day W. Casmir made some debut. Gaels have a player!

Some observations: 1) Casmir had a great freshman debut. Not the least bit timid. Stepped up for a BIG 3 when no one else was open or wanted the shot. He is a winner. 2) IW is the MVP of this game and maybe for the season. Contributes in so many ways. 3 PT shots, blocks, big rebounds, good passes. Best all around on the team. 3.) DL III has to do a better job of finding the open man when he is doubled. He backs in and gets tied up too often. Looked fatigued at the end of the game. Threw up a brick that didn't even get to the basket. Let the point guards bring up the ball. 4.)Amayo was a mixed bag. Great body and leaping ability (what a block!). Can't seem to finish around the basket. Shoots free throws like Charles Barkley swings a golf club. Poor technique..had to wonder why he was in at the end when free throws are so important. 5.) Dublin looks real strong. I like how he can come off the bench and wear down the other team's big guys. Also could give some fouls at a crucial point. 6.) AJ had a solid game. Sometimes tries to take it all on his shoulders at crunch time. That will probably change as other guys deign to step up and become more confident. 7.) would have liked to see more of Ellis. Watched him drain 3 pointer after 3 pointer from Armand-land before the game. 8.) HATE seeing 20 point leads shrink in the second half. This was a good team and maybe we weren't 20 points better, but I wish we could keep our foot on the jugular! 9.) a good W against a good team. We bent but didn't break.

59% from the free throw line. I know. This is a major pet peave of mine. Need to be in that 72-75% range each game. We clearly left 5 of 6 points on the table tonight. I plan on posting my observations under the CS thread later this evening
