Can't argue poor defense led to losing the big lead, but the first two offensive possessions after obtaining that lead were putrid, two extremely long 3's using no clock, no ball movement and no one under the boards to rebound. Cleveland State hits 2 quick 3's and its down to 14 pts in seconds. Got to do better game management there.

Free throws need improvement but we did hit 10 threes at a 40 % clip (10 of 25) .....

I believe I know who the MAAC ROW will be.
Huge shots at huge moments, this kid owns a huge pair!
I hope the rest of our guys take it up another notch so they don't need a freshman to bail them out.
Good to finally be on the right side of another close one with Cleveland St - they're a good team that should provide a nice RPI boost throughout the year.

Nice win against a good team that is going to win lots of games. hate to blow a 20 point lead, but they did not fold after falling behind. big balls by Casimir making that 3 to take the lead back. When Amayo gets rid of the rust and starts making a few more shots, this team is going to be very hard to defend. Not so sure I am buying in yet to Laury shooting so much from the perimeter. I believe he was 1-3 beyond the arc. needs to stay on the block, where he is impossible to guard and shoots at a high percentage. Agree TC is going to have to play at least Hines more minutes with IBN playing some. he did not hurt the team at all while on the court.

First time I've ever seen "the meltdown" in person. 90% physiological imo. Good analogy is a finely tuned, high performance sports car. Engine revving on high for a long period at some point needs to shut down. The guys were flying to start the second half. Got to 20 with about 14 minutes to go. I took a look at the clock because there was a time out and I was expecting the let down to come right there. And it did. And pretty much it was noticible on the defensive end where we had been playing with good intensity. Suddenly we weren't closing out shooters. And they got three three's in a row I think. No engine can run at top speed indefinitely. I don't know what the anwser is. Maybe when we are building such a lead, after the time out, put in a couple of fresh guys to keep the intensity up at least on the defensive end or figure out how to down shift without driving off the road into a ditch.

Great win for Iona tonight! Students were fantastic tonight brought energy and were a factor in the momentum on some runs. Should be a great game Tuesday morning looking forward to watching it. In regards to Sed agree absolute steal, Kid can flat out score. Defense was a little shaky towards the end but see improvement in not giving up that last second rebound which we did last year in many games. Also St. Peters lost by 12 to Brown.. Not a great start

Observations: 1). Team defense was terrific for the first 28 mins. Very shaky the final 12 mins, especially from the perimeter. 2). AJ & IW each came up big at clutch times. Making shots to change momentum was key. 3). DL was solid. Nice job on the boards. 4). Casimir, Amayo, and Mohammed each seemed tentative to start the game. Glad C and A became assertive. I would really like to see what kind of shot Mohammed has. Also, some tough luck misses by Amayo. Reminded me of Poole at the beginning of last season. 5). Dublin has a nice game and seems composed underneath the basket. My concern is at times he seemed surprised by boards coming his way and looked a bit tentative. I really need to further examine his ability to further assist DL with board duties. 6). Free throws are an issue and we will need to make 70-75% per game. Amayo, IW, and Dublin looked very shaky. 7). There is no doubt that we will need both Hones and Robinson (eventually) to help on the boards. DL cannot do it all by himself. This is imperative. 8). We played a very good CS team and I feel on a neutral court, this would have been a very even match. Similar to Indiana State and Middle Tenn State. I'm proud of The Gaels. Nice result out of the gate. I'm gonna dvr the Wofford, because as much as I love my alma mater, I ain't waking up at 4am to watch them. Compared to last season: Defense appears better this year, so long as we can keep focused throughout the game. Better offensive weapons last year Rebounding seemed better last year I have no clue how this team will finish, but I feel we will be in numerous nut cutters this season, and as long as we have guys like Casimir who have the moxy/balls as him, who want the ball at the end of the game, and are un afraid of failure, we should be fine.

All in all good performance by the Gaels. Work to be done no doubt. Cleveland State is a very physical team. As a skill finesse team that's a challenge for us be we handled it pretty well. They had one of the biggest human beings I've ever seen come off the bench. Guy has NFL tight end written all over him. Really nice debut for Casimir. The kid just knows how to score. Drove the basket and scored over bigger defenders twice. Very composed for a freshman. AJ drew most of the attention. He'll have to deal with it all year. Still was able to get his opportunities at the rim. Amayo looked healthy but as has been pointed out rusty. IW was IW and his play down the stretch was the reason we won. Intensity on D continues to plague us. Thought we played with good effort until we built the 20 point lead. Then we just stopped closing out guys on the perimeter and they made their uncontested shots. Thought Dublin added toughness. Needs to learn Cluess's system. Laury taking threes was fun to see. Mohammed did a good job running the offense when he was in. Very fast game with generally smaller lineups. Not really a game for Hines or Robinson. We'll see about the rotation v. Wofford Tues. 7 am.

I'll add my two cents. The game story was written a few centuries back, by former sports writer, Charles Dickens. Dickens used to preach defense, by pushing for defenders who could, "Pick a pocket or two". But last night his take would have been, "It was the best of times (17-0 run, I think, which resulted in a 20 point lead) and it was the worst of times (giving up 11-0 and 10-0 runs which turned the 20 point lead into a one point deficit). Things that contributed to Dickens' take: *AJ English. Someone said that he was Iona's next great player. But he wasn't last night. Two things might have contributed to that. First he was clobbered by former Iona recruit, Vinny Zoilo, and might have been playing hurt, resulting in a 5-13 shooting night. Or he might have been forcing things, with the understanding that NBA scouts are watching. A possibility. IMO, he has to play much better, if we are going to have a VG season. *Cedric Casimir. Played the same way as he did this summer, playing off the ball. He can and will score, but can he run an offense? Don't know. After one game, I think I know that there is no fear in his game. *DLIII. He shot 1-3 from deep, and was he trying to impress scouts, also? He had two assists, but could have had five or six if we were able to finish. A couple of behind the back passes were spot on, just weren't finished. *IW showed why he might be our best all around player, but his foul shooting was sup par last night. But he can and will do better from the line. *Amayo according to TC is about 60% conditioning wise, but it seems to me that his problem is rust, and is going to take a while before he knows what he's doing offensively and defensively. And his foul shot (line drives) is ugly. He shot 50% (5-10) from the line, and that might be the norm. *Dublin, w/o knowing where he was supposed to be on the court, I must say I was impressed with his play. Coaches must have thought differently, as only played 17 minutes. Like KA he's not a good FT shooter, but his shot 'looks' much better, so I'm hoping for better than 50%. *Deja Vu was getting a big lead by running and gunning and then slowing things down, waiting for the other team to catch up. Same way we play against the press. Too much DL and not enough guard play. Probably just have to accept that this is the TC way. Doesn't mean I have to like it. *Hines, and Ellis both had only cameos, but I don't read too much into their lack of PT. Just didn't seem that there was an opportunity for more time. Since Tuesday's game can be seen in Alaska, I'm hoping that Hines can get on the court for extended minutes. Fingers crossed. *I s/w a lot of fans who weren't happy blowing the 20 point lead but a win is a win.

We won the game.
Beat a quality mid that will likely be top 100 RPI by end of season.
Made defensive stops with the game on the line and when it mattered most.
Found a frosh who will give us four years of excitement and heart.
Student section was packed and rocking.
We are 1-0.
We will have plenty of time to complain this season. Why don't we save those days for losses, and just enjoy this one?

The one area in which the MAAC and Iona boards are comparable is the innate ability to form strong opinions based on a one-game sample.

Yeah agree one game is one game and it was the first game. Can't anoint anyone yet or dismiss anyone yet. Some good observations though.

Thanks Super. Wish I saw that in person. Most excited about the potential of Casimir! Someone mentioned Amayo missed a couple of bunnies. For the record those were in traffic with guys hanging on him. Rust.
