Sorry for that typing stutter. Like WFAN: long time reader, first-time poster. Just watch some other college bball games. The GOOD programs play defense. The situation here is a joke. Mediocre defense and this team would be 8-2. Are they not athletic enough? I don't think so. At a certain point you have to wake up. Recruiting and offensive stats get us all worked up. But come on - the whole system is bogus. Play some defense. Play some more players. We're not playing Kentucky & Duke here. teach D, play D, put your bodies in there, start beating the teams we are better than.

Cluess is a winner because he is a great offensive coach but the defense is frustrating. I think the kids just don't get his defensive system and also exert too much energy on offense to play good d. Not sure if they ever can be great with this system but if they can get in to the tourney and have a great day from 3 they can knock someone off.

I was at the game and had the pleasure of meeting greg. Greg put it best when he said that we controlled the first 5 minutes of the game and GMU controlled the rest of the game.
I don't remember the last time I saw the Gaels called for offensive interference. Tonight I saw it twice right in front of me.
I was hoping that the Gaels would pull out a "W" in the last couple of minutes, but bad bounces, missed rebounds, and GMU's excellent free throw shooting ended that hope.
AJ and IW were shut down 3-wise. I thought that AJ was pushed around a lot and thought that GMU would have gotten called for a number of fouls on him. Face it, everyone we play is going to try to blanket AJ.
We play solid defense for periods of time, but can't seem to sustain it for 35 seconds at a clip.
Not blaming the loss on the refs, but they were terrible (especially the short white guy who called the intentional on Ibn).
I expected a win, but am not surprised by the loss.
Go Gaels!!!

At this point we're not a good TEAM yet. We may be by February.

I wish we would make an effort to play some solid defense. Any decent athlete can play defense. All it requires is determination and desire. Teams that play good defense tend to be more focused. Players need to understand that what they do when they don't have the ball is just as important as when they have it. Good defense creates better offense. All the great coaches have been proponents of defense. Anyone who understands the game knows that a great team can't be one dimensional. Iona's zone is static and the back line has more holes in it than Swiss cheese. We don't bother to close out the other team's shooters and make desperate leaps at them as they go up for wide open looks. Our players then point fingers at each other when everyone is to blame. Cluess and his staff should spend the next week working on nothing but defense. If we don't get better at it we'll be in trouble come post season.

Yeah Z it looked to me that AJ got bumped and banged a few times and got no call. Life on the road. As Chelsea will tell me, its not the refs fault we lost. And it isn't.

Lots of complaints about the D, but if you told me we would hold an opponent to 43% shooting, I'd sign for it in a heartbeat.
We let them control tempo. They milked the clock the first 15 minutes of the second half and we let them. That's on the staff.
Iona had a million turnovers today but shot 50% for the day. Problem was we didn't shoot as many 3s as normal.

Its easier to play when you are in tight, tense, stressful games like championship games. To play high level offense you need to be relaxed and fluid. You can play high level defense with nerves and butterflies. It takes effort and desire.

Terrible loss. We should not be losing to teams like GMU. Some thoughts from the game:
1. If anyone questions how bad a loss this was, we basically lost to Fordham tonight, as GMU was picked 13th in the A10. Best way to look at it. 2. We have too many unique offensive weapons to NOT get open shots for our guys. AJ had a bad night, but in his defense, we didn't run many sets for him that would allow him to get back into the flow of the game. 3. DL3 with 16 rebounds but seemed like his head was elsewhere at times. 4. Horrible clock management down the stretch. Couldn't figure out whether we should be fouling or playing d, so instead we decided to hedge and foul with 15 seconds on the shot clock a few times. Just makes no sense. 5. Believe our first "true" forced turnover came at the 1 minute mark when we got a 5 second call on GMU. That simply can't happen. 6. Hines not bringing anything at all to the table right now. 7. Bebis continues to be a bright spot, and slowly playing his way into the rotation and building confidence each game. 8. Frustrating that we let them execute their game plan of milking the clock the entire second half when they were up 8-12 points. With foul trouble not being an issue at the time, couldn't understand why we weren't in their face and pressing earlier on. 9. Amayo will dominate in the MAAC. 10. Turning into a typical Iona season. Letdowns in OOC play but talent is there for sure, and we'll definitely get our act together by tourney play, but our early season woes will likely cost us dearly come seeding time if we're fortunate enough to make it.
Go Gaels!!!

I will also say that I really appreciated SID getting me a ticket. I was able to say hello to Gary and Kevin before and after the game. While I was watching the Gaels warm up it was pretty classy of Jared Grasso and Brock Erickson to come over and say hello to me.
Keep the faith, boys and let's get a win in Philly.
Go Gaels!!!
Ooops, forgot about FGC on Tuesday. Let's win that one, too.
Go Gaels!!!

We need to get the squad to jell, and we need to adapt to what teams are doing to slow down AJ. Early season has been erratic so far, that's for sure.
We've had a good run of success the past 4 + years. It has spoiled all of us a bit. This team still has time to come together and start playing well consistently. Let's hope the coaching staff finds a way to get that done, and that the team executes well on that plan.
