Hopefully the week lay off will serve us well.
Stags are 1-3, including blowout loss at UNC and a respectable 7 point road loss to Northwestern. Would expect us to be double digit favorites on our home floor in this one.

Yeah I think Ken Pom predicts us winning by 10 or 11. Hopefully we'll use the time off wisely and figure out a way to play some semblance of defense and figure out how to get the ball inside some on offense. Two winnable games before we head out to Tulsa. Let's come out strong and confident.

Someone made an observation about our defense in the Delaware game, that we'd play good defense for 90% of a possession and then fail to close out on the shooter. I think that is very accurate. Hope Cluess has them working on that.

1983, in the past it was said that Iona played good defense for the 30 seconds, when we had a 35 second clock. Now they probably say we play good defense for 25 seconds. Simple answer is to go with the Pro clock. But seriously when I saw the video of the OSU game, it looked like, as in previous years, that Iona players leave their own man to help out a teammate. And invariably "their" man is left open for a shot, or able to hit the offensive basket for an uncontested rebound. As Bill Bellichek says, "Do your job".

For the past several years, our guards drop off on D to help out inside. They were protecting Mike Glover and David L. People came down the middle trying to get Mike and David out of the game. We need to change that paradigm. I was not trying to be a smartass (some think it comes naturally) when I made a couple of posts that we are still playing small. Our guards are still protecting the middle. Compare that to Manhattan last year where they guarded the trey with confidence that the middle was taken care of - same with Valpo, with Oregon State, with Rhode Island. I'm hoping that we see less of this with the emergence of Jordan, Taylor and Ryden when he returns. While I like Aaron's D, I don't think he has the size to stand in there and control the paint. I think a few Jeff Rulandesque shots from Jordan and friends will let people know that you come in the middle at your own risk. To paraphrase Jeff, you have five fouls to give (with us it is now 15); make sure they count.

Make sense. I think Roundtree has a better shot at being an enforcer than Hines though.

I can't get over FF scoring over 100 points in a game, as I didn't think that it was in their DNA. They have three newcomers, all freshmen I believe, who have contributed in the early going, and Gilbert and Nelson are pretty good. Originally I thought that our game with them would be easy, but now I'm not sure. One thing that helps, is their big win, yesterday, and that should make it easier for TC to get the team's attention.

They looked pretty good in the first half against North Carolina, I think they are better than expected and won't be an easy win.

That's good. This team has the talent to win the MAAC and compete with anyone on the schedule. It won't be easy so they will be tested and will have to develop as a team in order to do that.

FF's game, tonight, against a VG Columbia team, should give us a good indication of just how improved the Stags are. Fairfield a 6 point dog to Columbia tonight. Monmouth a 7 1\2 dog to Dayton also tonight. That should go lower, but Dayton's very good and will be a test to Monmouth's recent raves...

FF got another 30+ point game from Gilbert in their 83-82 win over the Lions. And their five man bench accounted for another thirty points with a nice 10-6-4-6-4 point distribution. I guess, if we do struggle, we can blame it on the long layoff.

Also, I just read on Big Apple Buckets, that FF played last night's game on campus before a mostly filled gym, rather than in Bridgeport, before a mostly empty arena. And their win over Columbia was even more impressive, when you realize that they played w/o their starting (and also backup) PG.

From the little that I can gather from behind the Iron Curtain wall practices have being going well with emphasis on passing and ball movement........ Of course Fairfield is playing better and has caught everybody's attention, but we have handled them easily in recent years...This games should be tougher, but they have not yet closed the gap......... At home we have won 19 in a row most of which have been easy victories...That and Iona with a basketball starved home crowd behind them, familiar rims, 11 days without travel and constructive practice also behind them we will be raring to go...The setting will be to our advantage...My guess, we will be a 4 to 6 point favorite and if we can establish early Iona type play, we will show once again that we are the team to beat in our conference... In my wildest pre-season dreams did I ever imagine Fairfield being a threath.........We have inactive, but hopefully not entirely asleep...
