I recently was watching Masterpiece Mystery (Endeavour), one of my favorites. And in the story, set in the 1960's, Inspector Thursday, was feeding a runaway kid a sandwich, and he admonished him to, "also eat the crusts". And that brought me back to my childhood, that anytime (in the 40's) I had a sandwich, I only ate the white part of the bread. And I don't remember when that changed, though I do know that while at Iona College and having lunch at Benny's Deli, I ate the whole sandwich. Does anyone remember not eating the crusts?

In the words of my grandmother, Greg had a lot of crust saying that.

Reminds me of this quip seen at the Mayflower coffee/doughnut shop, Centre Ave and LeRoy Pl (across from Blessed Sacrament church) in NewRo...
“As you ramble on through life, Brother, Whatever be your goal, Keep your eye upon the doughnut, And not upon the hole.”

Cjb, I not only remember it, but used it often in my work. Not kidding. Along the way one of my bosses borrowed/stole it and used it to make a point.
