We have to start playing with greater intelligence. And we need greater effort and intensity on defense. For this game and all remaining games. The number of stupid fouls, missed defensive assignments, turnovers, arguing with refs, you name it, is out of control. This team plays dumb. Cluess has to find a way to fix that.
Siena is filled with slow moving spot up shooters, led by a talented, intelligent (but relatively slow moving) freshman point guard. In theory, even this depleted Iona team should be able to overwhelm Siena. However, if the team continues to play with their heads up their asses, slow moving Siena will torch us.
Siena has trouble scoring, only averaging around 62ppg. Their freshman PG is having a great season, while very smart on the court, he is not very quick. Iona needs to pressure him and play him physical.
Let’s not get down by double digits in the first half. Our perimeter defense will have to be good this game. Ricky has to school Pickett (pg) and show senior leadership.
ic1983, you, as have our most supportive Gael fans, have been posting very optimistic projections for upcoming games. However, we are at a point where statements such as “even this depleted Iona team should be able to overwhelm Siena.” are really getting old. I want the best for our team but it’s highly unlikely we should expect to overwhelm anybody at this point... Maybe Bryant 😜

I don’t think we can overwhelm anybody either, but I do think we are better at home and have a good chance to win our next three, that being said it won’t come easy,we can’t win game 2 until we beat Siena first.i am always more confident at Hynes!!

Didnt we overwhelm Canisius in their place a couple weeks ago?
The greatest poster in the history of the MAAC as determined by THREE separate polls.
Iona is 5-4 in MAAC play, 4-0 at home and 1-4 on the road. Iona has 5 home games left--Siena, Quinny, Niagara, SPU and Canisius. 5-0 not impossible, but lets say 4-1. Four road games left--Siena, Quinny, Manhattan, Rider. Let's assume 1-3. That gets us to 10-8 overall. And those predictions are fair assumptions. Now--if we can find a way to win one more game than I say above--that's 11-7, and with a win over virtual first place lock Rider, we are in good position tiebreaker wise. Given what we have seen, 11-7 with a tiebreaker edge should be enough to get 3rd.
Like we've been saying, the MAAC is full of bad teams. We already whipped the best team, and beat a contender on the road. Fairfield came off their gem against us and was absolutely awful at Manhattan. Rider falls behind in every game, and squeaked by Marist and SPU at home, back to back. If we can just defend a bit better, even on par with what we are used to from Cluess teams, we will cut down the nets again. It's that simple.
So get off the ledge, boys. Lots of ball to go.

Great post! Impossible to overlook ANY games on the schedule given our erratic performance this year, but I think we should find a way to get to 11-7. Outside shot of 12-6, but I'll admit that seems like a stretch at this point.

I agree for the most part, but The road record tells me we may want to avoid Siena just as much as Rider, and I know we never lose to them in the postseason, even in Albany. However as we have all seen this team is different than past Cluess teams, as they showed by losing at Marist for the first time in 10 years. Yes, This flawed Iona team can win this tourney, but I like our chances much more if our path avoids Rider and Siena.

You are giving Siena too much credit. They have no experience and even less talent, and their biggest asset is negated by our own PG and his defense and 3 titles.

You may be right but I’d rather not find out, other than at canisus we have looked like a bottom 50 team on the road.
