Iona lost only McGill from a team that ran off a whole mess of MAAC wins and put a scare into UNC. If we add TOO many pieces, we risk some early season struggles that could hinder our OOC RPI and perhaps later our NCAA seeding. We're already adding McNeil as McGill's replacement (for lack of a better descriptor). The two guys who transferred out were last in our rotation, so they are not big losses. If we add Jelly and, say, another big, that's 3 guys we have to now blend into a rotation that was generally set. Could be disruptive.
Now, a counter-argument to my counter-argument. McGill logged very heavy minutes, and he was the heart and soul of last year's team, no question. He had countless big second halves after cruising through first halves, and we can all count on more than two hands how many times he'd have a breakaway steal for an easy 2. These are not easily replaced, and it will take time to do so, so we may have some early chemistry issues just based on having no more McGill out there any more, after watching him run the show the past 3 years.
I am not saying I don't want Jelly eligible if the opportunity is there. I am saying that we have many, many seniors departing after this year, and I would not be devastated if the Jelly era starts with us handing him the keys in 20-21. Now, I get it that if we have a chance for a special team/season while all those guys are still here and adding Jelly to that mix puts us there, given how many of you have had too many sleepless nights simply because we haven't won an NCAA game. So, what I guess I am saying is that whatever happens with Jelly, whether it's this year or next, I'm fine with it and am thrilled he's here.
The greatest poster in the history of the MAAC as determined by THREE separate polls.
Guy, all great points. However every year we stand off with 12 guys and by mid season we are down to 6 or 7. I say, if you can get talent like Jelly, get it and figure the rest out as you go.

It's hard to keep a straight face when reading some of this. I am not saying I don't want Jelly.. adding Jelly to the mix.. whatever happens with Jelly..
If we get a big with a last name that starts with B.. when that guy Perez and Washington are on the floor, can we call it the PB&J lineup?
I do see Guy's point about team chemistry, but it is clear that Iona can never pass down an opportunity to bring in a player like this. Hopefully it all works out. I still think Gist will get a lot of time handling the ball just like he did down the stretch last year.

I'm just waiting for your counter-argument for your counter-argument of your counter-argument. I once had a counter-argument at the College Diner. Think I was eating a PB&J.

Guy, in the words of Gordon Gekko, “greed is good”.
In the excitement over Washington, embarrassed to say I forgot about McNeil. So even if Washington doesn't get the waiver, Iona has a solid replacement for McGill. Looked back on his video and stats and he's a great talent. Could be a fantastic backcourt in 2020-2021.

Bring in as many studs as possible and see what happens. I trust TC would figure out the chemistry issues.
If this team has a chance (talent wise) to replicate the 1998 team, I think we would be in great shape.
As others have mentioned, our realistic chance at that elusive Madness victory would rely on a decent seed (something in the 11-13 range).
I expect we will sell out a few games if jelly plays, at my baseball game today 13-16, 14 out of 20 kids were like wow Iona brought jelly home
Agreed. This kid has a tremendous following. Guarantee you will also see more press coverage to start the season, and continue if he is playing well and Iona is winning
Well the N.Y. post and our friend Braziller already ignored the transfer in their sports page, not even a mention in sports shorts, but if a st. Chicken kid wins an off season horse game we have to read about it.

It would be fantastic if Washington could generate some publicity and buzz about iona basketball, but I doubt we will see much ( outside of his followers) with one exception. If Washington could help lead iona to an ncaa win his first year and turn around the second year and have a huge year followed by more ncaa wins then you could see something special happen, but it probably would take that extraordinary of a season or two to get iona noticed by most of the media, especially when you have guys out there doing everything they can to purposely ignore iona.

We need arena games vs big opponents with IW playing it will be a big game, every kid I talk to knows who he is and he hasn't even played good for the last 2 years
