I have cut back,,way back on posting because, for me, the fun had gone out of it. But, I want to pass along my thoughts on last Thursday's event. Especially if we have another one next year. And I'll start by recommending it to everyone, with a few caveats. First, it's not ideal for us "old guys". A lot of standing. Which you have to do, and circulation is a must. And second, this is an opportunity to MEET THE COACHES and not to pick their brains. Even though that's a temptation. This year, with close to 200 people in attendance (great crowd) it's hard to meet everyone, but if you listen you can pick up a few tidbits:
*Talking with a couple of assistant coaches, about the sked, I heard, "We're working on it, though I'm not involved with it". And that could be the problem. I thought that you were working on it. And I thought you were. *Hoping to meet the new assistant, Jeff Mailhot, but he wasn't there. (Bad News). Told he was out recruiting. (Good news). *Asked how many recruits would be at the "Ribbon Cutting". Told we'll have some, but no specifics. *Of the new guys who has impressed. In the last two weeks, AJ McNeil, has come on and shown good improvement in his game. *On waivers, Thiem has heard, and expect to hear on IW in the next two weeks. Also, Thiem is limited with an ankle problem, but coaches are excited about him. did NOT get to ask how he compares to Agee. *TC, in his address, talked mostly about Crawford and Gist, if my hearing didn't fail me. *Got to meet the president, and I must admit that while I watched his video on the official Iona site, he looked much different in person. Comes across as an easy to talk to kind of person. Before he left for Kentucky, prior job, he lived in Pelham for 15 years, so he was familiar with Iona. We can expect to see him at the BB games. *Matt Glovaski, mostly spoke about the HAC renovations, but did point out our winning streaks in XC, Men and Women, BB (M), Golf, and VB. Katie Janson (Sp?) the softball coach gave the opening talk by the coaches. As a former Gael athlete, she has an unique perspective, and did a nice job. *I'll close by giving props to all the people who had to make an effort to attend, travel, etc. And that includes Guy, who I thought just stopped by on his way home from work. But then learned he had to travel from his home/office, which is located between Bridgeport and New Haven. Bottom line, I recommend it to everyone, if they have it next year.

Thanks for the update, missed your summer workout reports.
Great to hear coach Mailhot is out recruiting. Great reputation recruiting JUCO kids and I'm sure he's already built relationships with some very good JUCO recruits while at New Mexico St. Maybe Iona can steal a higher level recruit. Also good to hear the staff is planning to have recruits attend the ribbon cutting and open team scrimmage. Thanks again
brff and sharkey, my idea of summer workouts, is being able to get out of bed. But hopefully, next summer, with construction finished on the HAC and the LSOB, parking will be easier, and I'll once again hear the Siren's Call.
Nice hearing from you ic59. Also echo sharkey’s comment about missing your summer workout reports...
Great hearing from you.
Looks like the event was a success and hope the Arrigoni Challenge got a big plug--more donors needed!
This event showcases the entire department, which is a good thing to provide us hoop fanatics with an important perspective. There are 20 other teams that represent Iona--several of which have had great success.
Glad to hear it was a success. Im going to put a side note in here as im not sure where to put it. There needs to be a better way to get students to start following the social media platforms. It's unbelievable to me that every student has a phone twitter and Instagram and athletic post get maybe a dozen likes.. were talking about thousands of kids. I am hoping Washington will help bridge that gap because to me that's just awful that there's little buzz generated with athletic social media at Iona. My high school which had 400 students does a much better job at getting people to follow, comment, like.

Fair point. As far as Washington he has posted about Iona on Instagram. He has posted pics and video from a home soccer game. Agree, Iona is in a great position to hype the program this year between IW, upgraded facility and the expectations of a very good season.

excellent input. This is being addressed and the folks involved understand the importance of using social media as a strategic platform.

I forgot to add that in addition to the coaches, the event is also an opportunity to meet former players. And on Thursday, I got to say hello to two former Gaels, Kashief Hameed and Marvin McCullough. Two VG players, but even better people. And I don't know how he does it, but Marvin looks younger than when he graduated (2006).

Marvin has been active with some Goal Club events. We need to be reaching out through these 2 to engage more former players. Kevin Vesey has recently become more visible within the program.

59:
Thanks for the update. Prior to your thread, I was beginning to wonder if there even was a Meet The Coaches event. Further, it was probably naïve of many of us to think we were going to learn anything of significance at this event. That's OK! It's a wonderful opportunity to press the flesh, and that has tremendous value for engaging alums to pull out the checkbook.
I am going to play the Out Of Towner card again. I see little in athletic department communications to motivate me to open my checkbook. Why do I have to wait for an update from 59 to even learn that the event even took place? If not for this Board, I would have no clue as to what is happening in Iona Athletics. While I am on my rant, what is with the 7 second coaches videos on YouTube?
My daughter is in college, and they are looking for some $$ on top of the tuition payments. With today's technology, there is no excuse for the absence of reach.
SLG, I understand your frustration, but I have to come to the aid of the athletic department. Go to the official Iona site and if you look at the videos and stills you can get a good understanding of what's going on with Iona athletics. A podcast is included, along with interviews with coaches. But to be realistic we have to remember Iona is a small school with a modest athletic budget. When TC, a couple of years back told me that he didn't want me writing about what I might have seen in practice, I told him about guys like you. Fans that don't live near the school but thirst for some BB news. Needless to say I didn't convince him.

"We're working on it, though I'm not involved with it"- In regards to the schedule? Sounds like someone is trying to distance themselves. Does not instill confidence.

Agree about last sentence, but id like to assume that was their instructed response that was told to them prior to the event in anticipation of that question.
