Going back, way, way back to the fifties: Jumbo Lyons, who played with Richie Guerin (or just before him), was a transfer from NC State. A 6'5 big man, and an Iona great. Marty Conlin (Sp?) transferred from UNC. He was from MSM HS and played with Warren Isaac. We were hoping to get his son from Stepinac but he went to Providence. There was a NY HS kid who transferred from Syracuse (Valvano era), 6'7, but I forget his name. Wasn't bad. Back in the sixties we got a 6'9 kid from Concordia, Augie Kaufman. Concordia, at the time, was a two year college. John McDonald, mentioned earlier, was notable for two reasons. One, he was a star at Mt. Vernon HS, and two he transferred within the MAAC, which was frowned upon. Back in my time, Stan Hill, who passed away this year, and was an early (maybe the third) black player at Iona, transferred from NYU. Great stuff 59!

Rountree came from a big program (Wake) but was basically a low bench player before he came to Iona. He turned out to be a big contributor to the Gaels, but at Wake he was very much under the radar and only played limited minutes.

Two of the biggest hyped transfers never materialized: Julian Sensley and Norvelle Pelle. As for those that did the 3 biggest by far are Sean Green, Momo Jones and Isiah Washington. Glover was hyped big time but he was really a Juco transfer. One minor one no one mentioned yet was Alvin Lott, heard a lot about him before he arrived here.

I think he ended up signing with Hawaii.

Another low hyped player who turned into a bigtime contributor was Tre Bowman from Penn St.

Believe it was deshaun Williams. Perhaps the most hyped out of them all.

The Manhattan game was (IMO) Jelly's worst in quite a while as he shot 1-10, and never got the offense going in our loss to the Jaspers.

Hope to see him bounce back tonight against QPAC, a team that reminds me of past Iona teams. Has shooters all over the court but not very strong on the defensive end of the court. IW hopefully continues to improve. He will be the only Iona player returning next season who I would consider a impact player. He's likely to be the only Iona player with a chance to be named preseason All-MAAC. Can't remember the last time Iona will be entering a season without a couple All-MAAC level kids.
