Circa 2004 or 05 I was on the FAN with Chris Russo and I made the point based on material I had read that the future of college hoops was going to belong more and more to the big football schools simply because of the revenue football generated for the entire athletic department and how that would support men’s basketball. While long neglecting hoops, many of these schools woke up to the opportunity to cash in on the NCAA Tourney revenue. This was before the break up of the Big East due to that very reason and around the time St Joe’s garnered a #1 Tournament seed much to the outrage of Billy Packer. So how has that prediction played out? Of Ken Pom’s current top 25, these are the only schools without big time football:
#8 Villanova #9 Gonzaga #15 Marquette #18 Xavier #19 Seton Hall #21 Providence #24 St. Mary’s #25 Butler
That’s 8 out of 25. Is this a traditionally good percentage of non big time football schools? We all know if they could the power 5 would exclude non football schools in a heartbeat to amass more control and more market share. Has it been a success? Is there still hope for the “little guy?” One can argue even these non football schools with the exception of Seton Hall, Providence, and St. Mary’s don’t fall anywhere near the category of “little guy.” For example, Gonzaga is a mid Major in name only, Butler has a rich and storied hoops tradition, and recently been to a national title game. Villanova has two recent national championships.

Interesting points there Bill, I think there will be some big changes in the landscape of the NCAA, in the future, if the student athletes start going to the highest bidders. As far as the 2004 prediction about the football schools dominating college hoops, I don't think that happened. LSU, BAMA, Notre Dame are not hoops powerhouses. Just as Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky are not the best football squads. I think the biggest indicator of sustained success in basketball is the coaching, basically household names that are royalty on campus. Roy Williams, Krzyzewski, Boeheim, Calhoun, Mark Few, etc.(I think Brad Stevens is a prime example) Year in and year out these guys have the resources, support of the school administration, alumni support, and they happen to be great coaches. The point about "the little guy" is spot on. Everything works against them from scheduling to coaching to recruiting to facilities. The gap is growing and will continue to.
