Thanks for the welcome folks. The story as I heard it at the time was that he was playing intramural football and in a fit of anger (hard to believe he had those right) he punched another student in the head and broke his hand. I was under the basket for Vickers last shot. We were down 72-71 with under 10 seconds. Unfortunately Glenn did not see Jeff all alone under the basket and he took the shot. Gtown got the rebound and we fouled. They made 2 free throws and won 74-71. At least that is how I remember in 31 years later. I also remember sitting next to guys in the Garden that were there to root for the McCray brothers. One guy kept saying how they were going to eat Jeff alive. At one point in the game Jeff put a move on one of them along the baseline (Scotty I think) and slammed the ball home. I turned to the guy and asked if he still thought Jeff was a plough horse.

Jeff did sock a kid during an intramural football game on campus. I knew the kid and his family from the old neighborhood. I don't think that was related to the broken hand he had during the NCAAs. I thought he hurt his hand on the rim jamming during practice the day before the Georgetown game.
You have the game scenario 100% correct. Jeff was wide open. You must have been sitting near me because I recall being in front of the shot too. The winning foul shots were at the other end.
I was 5-6 buds at the game and some beer was spilled on the McCray supporters. They weren't happy campers, wanted to start something but didn't because were outnumbered.
Have a good Jimmy V story....
During Jim's 3rd or 4th year I was at a Knick game when I hear my name yelled out at the end of the 1st quarter. I turn around and there's Jimmy V sitting by himself and more than a bit under the weather from afternoon social activities at Mama Leone's after the weekly sports writers luncheon. He was in "great" shape. I ask him why he's at the game and he tells me he's the half time guest. Wow. A few coffees and hotdogs later and he was on with Marv Albert. Drove him back to NR and we hear on the radio that Columbia just beat St Johns. We went nuts! What a special time.

Boy, there must have been a bunch of us under that basket. I will never forget that shot. I remember jumping up, holding my breath and the complete dejection when it missed. And yes, Jeff was wide open. He also tried to punch me once - We were both in "great" shape after an evening of social activities. Fortunately a friend and I believe Kevin Vesey got between us and he missed. Ahhh... the memories!

Kevin Hamilton would have been the biggest beneficiary of a 3 point play line, back in the day for Iona.
