As a walk on fine, if he gets an available scholly for next year I have to assume the staff sees something they like.

STAC got thumped twice by CW Post last year, but maybe Cluess sees something he likes in this kid.

Rashad has been promised a scholarship for 2011-2012; financial aid has him set up for the transfer year.

I heard about James last weekend through a relative who knows him.
I thought it odd a D2 kid would move up to D1 - I don't recall ever hearing that happen (guess that's what crossing that Tappan Zee Bridge will do to you). ;-)
Anyway, knowing there weren't any more available ships, I figured he was walking on.
A 16 ppg scorer is a huge loss for STAC - and numbers like that tell me he'll be able to hold his own at the D1 level, but I'm still not sure of the logic in all of this.

I know nothing about James. But a quick search of the net show he's become somewhat of a folk hero with his dunking ability. I have found blogs in Japan and the UK mention his "exploits." One video on YouTube linked above has over 40,000 views. A longer vid with fewer views has some breathtaking slams.
Oldtimer, have you ever had the opportunity to see him play?

I think this kid comes in with a chip on his shoulder looking to prove something, to prove he belongs in D1 hoops. Could be a good thing, Im sure he'll be busting his hump in practice while he sits out this season

Is this a 1st example of the new staff looking to local Westchester players? Was it our new assistant from Mt. Vernon who may have coached Ra"Shad in summer league play??
I like to think this another plus with the Cluess crew...

James played high school ball with Sean Kilpatrick who went to Cincincati, got recruited over and was forced to redshirt. Kilpatrick should've opted for a mid-major.

Some of these kids believe their own hype and are steered wrong by their so called handlers. I put Mookie Jones in the same category. If both stayed local(even local Big East-SJU,Rutgers) they probably would be starting

I follow Westchester HS BB, to a point, but this name escaped me. Sean Kilpatrick got most of the WP print, a few years ago. One thing I was surprised to learn was that their coach, Shelly Mayfield, is also in charge of east coast scouting for the Utah Jazz. Or at least he was a year or two back. And because Mt. Vernon, and lately New Rochelle, and their coaches get the bulk of the HS attention in Westchester, WP (and Mayfield) usually flies under the radar.
That being said this move surprised me, and I can't understand it, as he basically, will have one year as a scholarship player, and this means we'll have only scholarship to give for the Class of '11. Maybe Iona is trying to hype up the Maroon Madness crowd, as his dunk (You tube) was pretty impressive. Bottom line, this why we're paying TC the big bucks.

I forgot to add this, Cjb said that it was odd to see kids move up to DI. I remember back in the eighties when Holy Cross got a transfer from either a DII or DIII school, and he went on to tear up the MAAC(and Iona) for a couple of years. His name, I believe, was Jim McCaffrey. But it is odd to see this.

EPat......A couple of years or so when James was playing for White Plains, I did make it point to go to a couple of their games to take a look at Rishawn Johnson who we were looking at...He eventually took his nearly 300 lb body to Canisius..While at these games, I must have saw James play, but I have no memory of it..
I did however call a person who has much knowledge of local High School teams to in ask about James...He stated that James has a strong body with considerable hops, (4.7 rebounds per game at 6-1 is impressive) and considered a late bloomer........I to also find this move puzzling as it might take away a 2011 scholarship. but will trust the judgement of Coach T.C. who has seen him play at least a couple of times while at CW POST.
I have one concern..We now have 3 short term players..I hope we are not loading up for the immediate future, and paying less attention to longer term aspirations.
Go Gaels!!!!

Another diamond in the rough found by Cluess. Sometimes players slip through the cracks. They wait too long to decide on a college and by then the offers have used up their ships.
Whether it be Juco or DII talent can be found anywhere. Any guard who can jam and pick up a rebound or 2 is fine by me.
The authority.
