we got to play st. chicken at msg in the finals. My friend from st john's asked me this question after i complained that the NY Post had St johns pass us as no 1 in the area even though we didn't lose and moved into first.

NCAAs. Always NCAAs.

I'd rather go out in the NCAA first round than WIN the NIT.
The NCAA tournament captivates the nation.
The only people who care about the NIT are the fans of the teams playing - compared to the NCAA's it's a mere (consolation prize) parting gift.

i agree, but his point was that we are the little brother and we haven't received the recognition from the local media that over the last 20 yrs we have gone to the dance a lot more than them. And recently have simply been better. that we would get more publicity beating them in the NIT finals then losing in the 1st round again. Nationally I agree NCAA bid is better, but locally since we are still behind hofstra, fordham and manhattan in coverage it mind mean more for us.

If we beat St. John's we get NYC area recognition for a day. Then the coverage reverts back to St. John's et al.
The kids we are trying to recruit rather be in the NCAAs.

I hate St. Chicken as much as anyone but this isn't even close. What JerryIona said is exactly right. NCAA and best case NCAA without St. Chicken there or even better case no other NY metro team.

Today bracketology: Lunardi has us 14 playing Michigan St, Palm also has us 14 playing Cinncinati. Based on looking at 13 seeds it is not out of the question for us to end up there if we get in. Looks to me like automatic bid teams are weaker than normal this year.

I think this is a good question and a valid point. If you are telling me for 1 year would we be better off in the NIT finals (Whether against St. John's or anyone else) or getting flattened in the first round of the NCAA tournament, I would say yes, I'll take that. However, if we have a team capable of getting to the NIT finals (Remember there are some pretty good teams in that tournament), we would probably be good enough to upset someone in the NCAA tourney. Either one of those results means better recruits. So, I would take either one you could guarantee me.

greg, and the reward for the NIT would be playing St. Chicken, if it was say Alabama I don't know if anyone in nyc would care. also it wouldn't help if st johns made the ncaa's and we were in the NIT

NCAA= stunning woman on handsome man's arm
NIT= 4am last overweight broad left at the bar and the guy is wasted!
Either way you take the post season, but one's preferred over the other

My brother had a theory in his single days that five 2s equal a 10.

My brother had a theory in his single days that five 2s equal a 10. So now I get it - 5 straight years in the NIT is equal to one year in the NCAA!
