After more than a year long recovery from Tommy John surgery, apple sauce (my daughter's nick name for Jason) returns to the Cards tonight. Jason is regarded as a very positive influence in the club-house; and, in addition to his pitching, he may just bring the levity needed to loosen up the Cards. Reports are that his velocity is back to 95+, not quite at his 98+ prior to surgery.
My guess is that the Cards will ease him back by using him in the 7th/8th inning, and use Rosenthal as the Closer. Apple sauce and rosy may share closing duties later in the season. That could be a formidable duo.

Once he re-calibrates the heater. Jason has quite the beard going - well fertilized on North Avenue, I assume.

Jason's fastball is down about five m.p.h., hitting the low 90's in his first outing. The big question is how much more velocity he can get on his heater.

Meant to give you a guys an update yesterday. Jason made his debut the night before last with a scoreless 1.67 outing. 59 is correct; his velocity was down to 92MPH from 99 before his injury. However, his location was excellent except for one pitch. He got tagged for a line to the wall, which led to great relay from left field, to SS, and a bang-bang tag-out at the plate by Yadier Molina. Jason tapped Yadi on the shoulder as they ended the inning and is reported to have said "Glad you are back there buddy". The post game talk show was all about Jason's ability to lighten the room and his positive influence on his team-mates. We did not see this aspect of Jason until about mid 2012. He has emerged as a leader of the Cards. The only negative I saw is that he wore a Michigan (his home State, I believe) cap in post game interviews. The Iona Athletic Department may want to send him a few "sky pieces".

Jason motte is a team leader and everyone in the cardinal organization thinks of him highly. Several friends of mine who play for the cardinals on the major league roster tell me that he's a dynamite guy who they look up to. My older brother actually played with him at Iona and has kept tabs with him for several years so I have some knowledge when discussing things about him. In regards to the baseball aspect he will be fine, the problem though is his fastball velocity might never come back to triple digits but will return to mid 90's form. The misconception with tommy john surgery is that people believe you come back throwing harder than you did before the surgery when in actuality you don't. Your ligaments and muscles take a beating from the continuous non-natural arm motions. Jason probably will never return to the closer role for the cardinals because of Rosenthal but he will be a great setup man and will always have a future in the cardinals organization as a player and down the line as a coach.

In his second outing on Saturday, against Cincy (away game), Jason started the ninth with a four run lead, 6-2. Gave up a leadoff HR and then got two outs, before issuing a walk, and was then removed, in favor of Rosenthal, who picked up the save. However, Jason's velocity improved to 94 mph, so to me that was a positive. Look for him to get some work against the Yankees in the three game series, which starts today at four on ESPN, I believe.

Jason pitched an uneventful inning yesterday in Cards final home game. Question here in STL is whether or not Jason made his last regular season outing as a Card.
With Closer Rosenthal's command problems this season, that may have kept the door open for Jason to return. Will the Cards be willing to pay what it takes for him to return. Jason is very popular here, so there is a lot of sentiment for him to return.

How about them Cards? Lot of media talk about the fact that Clayton Kershaw only threw 2 mistake pitches. Clayton did pitch a great game. But how about the two guys who hit those two mistakes?

SLG, in NY they think that the baseball season is over. Same in LA! Just a note here - since Albert Pujols left for $240+MM; Cards have won 19 post season games, Albert - 0.

Big-time Giants fan here, SLG! Both teams have dominated NLCS last 5 years! Either the Giants or the Cards have represented the NL in the World Series in a 5 year span - with this year being one of the 5. I know! Pattern is that this is the Giant's year. Then again, this was Clayton Kershaw's year.
