I always try to be objective. I haven't had much time this year to post. I knew SJU was vastly overrated at 15. I knew that would be the highest rating they would receive for the next six or seven years, at least. But some people here are complaining about their schedule strength. Saying matter of factly (especially you OT) that their schedule is a hoax, and that they don't play anyone other then Syracuse. Take a look at their SOS. NINE!!! That's their SOS. What are you complaining about? Aside from Syracuse at the Dome, they played Minnesota. They played Gonzaga, which is now ranked about sixth. A good St. Mary's team. Long Beach St. And as far as the home games go, the high majors host the mid majors. It's business. It maximizes revenue for both levels of teams.
Well said. OT you cannot be disgruntled about their scheduling. They scheduled their games properly to potentially position themselves in the top 25. They beat teams they were supposed to beat. Something Iona should've done this season (Wofford, Monmouth, George Mason). No excuses. Your supposed to beat those teams. You want more National and Metropolitan area attention, then you go into Arkansas, 5-0, you go into George Mason 8-1 and beat the teams your supposed to beat early on in the season. Honestly, we shouldn't lose more than one game in the MAAC, and the only loss OOC should be Arkansas, (Maybe UMASS). OT, you want to bash St. Johns for their lack of scheduling or favored media coverage, that's injudicious. They have every single advantage over us, and they have not performed poor this year. They have no bad losses, and they beat the teams they were supposed to beat. It's irrelevant to act vacuous, unless we truly have a better team then them and they're struggling, but right now they aren't struggling and they are a talented team and there rank has been warranted by their efforts this year. With that being said, Lets go Gaels. Gotta run away with this MAAC, win Conference tourney and then the media will be more interested and engrossed with us.
Good job new guy, look forward to reading more of your posts

Welcome aboard.
Well said, but borderline delusional to think that we should win all of these games without factoring in any letdowns.

Welcome Mike. A couple of things. I agree that SJ's schedule isn't bad. Don't know where that comes from. Hofstra's schedule is bad if anyone wants to see a bad schedule. And I'm talking about OOC only. Fordham's is pretty bad also, for an A-10 team.
Its very hard to win road games in college hoops. I don't think I'd say we should've won the Wofford game. They are a good team, very experienced returning a lot of players. Teams like that have an advantage early in the season, especially when playing teams integrating new players into the lineup. I think everyone gets hung up on their name "Wofford" and conference and doesn't realize they are a good team. No shame in that loss. The only loss we have so far that I would say is a bad loss is Monmouth. We're better than Monmouth. UMASS and GM have good size, rebound well, and are tough to beat at home. Arkansas is very hard to beat at home. They have size, athleticism, and play in a sauna. On paper we should be favored in all of our remaining games, at this point. Doubt we win them all. Every team has some stinkers and conference opponents know you inside and out which is why conference games are the toughest.

Good posts, but should never have lost to GM. They are terrible.

Rank is warranted? st Johns hasn't beat a ranked team. They just lost to 2 un ranked teams in a week. They beat Syracuse in a down year.
ctbill, I believe he is saying they aren't all bad loses but to get the exposure that people complain we don't get you need to win a couple of those games so if we won them than the papers would talk about the big game against Arkansas even if we lost but played well

I want to win those games as much as we all do, but let's be honest. Beating Arkansas is not going to be a game changer with regard to publicity. If we do it consistently and crack the Top 25 somehow or if we knock off a traditional power like Kansas or Kentucky, then that's a different story. Otherwise, the only path to big time recognition for the program is to keep winning the MAAC and somehow figuring out a way to get over the hump with an NCAA win.

In all fairness, their losses are against current AP poll #6 Gonzaga, current #8 Villanova, current #19 Seton Hall and current #28 Butler. I don't know at this point how good or bad they are but they lost to quality teams (2 at MSG, 1 at home and 1 on the road).
05, I think that beating Arkansas on the road does help you get noticed, but expecting it is not realistic. And yes, I agree that getting into the Tourney is the better exposure and winning 1 or more once you are there is the best.

Say we would have the same outcomes in all of our games with the exception of a win at Arkansas. We would be 11-4 instead of 10-5 with a quality SEC road win. Would this really make a significant difference in terms of our notoriety? Other than a few mentions and pats on the back from the press right after the game I'm not sure it would really do much from a recognition standpoint in the grand scheme of things. Of course it would be a huge boost to our resume, at-large chances, etc. But as far as recognition goes in mainstream media don't think it would have a lasting impact. Just my take.

iona05, I concur with your sentiments. If the program can maintain the current level of success for several more years it should attract more attention. Rome was not built in a day.
We can't expect to win every road game and I think wofford was a very tough game to win. Can't say George Mason is that bad anymore-take a look at their 118 RPI. At this point we probably should have 1 or 2 more wins on a whole.
As for St. johns all they will end up being is a bubble NCAA team and proved to me that is all they are with their two last losses(Butler at Carnessecca and Villanova blow out at MSG). How any #15 rank team can lose their only two games in a week (Seton hall and Butler) and still be ranked is beyond me, obvious media bias. If we had the same exact schedule, which of course would never happen, we would be lucky to have received one vote.

I just said it "would help get us noticed". More positive reinforcement. That's all.
Welcome Ionamike.....Good rational opening post....So as I am understood.......
I have been long time St. John's fan...Probably attended their games first before WW2 in the old garden...A trolley car ride to 241st the with a transfer ticket to the elevated and subway line. The total cost was 5 cents. The powerhouse city teams were St. John, NYU and CCNY....They also front ended their schedule with lesser teams, then if they could win at least half of the remainder tough games would be assured of a Tourney bid...
This system is still used today.....My displeasure was not so much with its use, but with the sport writers and their eagerness to champion a NYC team...They were certainly aware of the woeful Johnies OOC schedule and the deception it would bring...When St, John started off the season 11-1, they immediately placed them in the Nations 15 top teams and as high as number 10...
Now that the season has entered conference play, St. John's has yet to win a game and are dead last in the Big East...My purpose was not to wish St. John of any ill will but just to give my experience and a warning of the rocky road ahead...
Keep Posting.............
A word to 1970....I made a computer effort to find the poll which placed St. John number 10...I only found the AP Poll that carry's such past records...Season week number 7 will show them at no. 14...I am unable to visit local library to look over past sport pages.....So give the Oldtimer the benefit of a break, there was a selection or two as number 10...

Both Seton Hall and Butler were not ranked when they beat a ranked St Johns team. They are lucky to limp into the NIT, again
