Preliminary Final Tally-If someone who hasn't voted votes in next week-we can add
Burtt Snr-7 Ruland -6 Kirksay 5 Hargraves -4 (including IC59 wife) 1 each for: Truesdale, Larsen, Guerin, Timinskas, Springer Snr, Issac, Machado, Solivar and McMillan.
After a big early start Kirksay was caught by our best ever player and our all time leading scorer. If some still didn't vote they could change the outcome. Love the Truesdale and McMillan votes as I was a huge fan of each. Two of my next favorite players who did not get votes were Bryan Matthew, and Steve Burtt Jnr.

Missed Tootie's Burtt Snr vote puts him ahead with 7

Just to put the difference between 'Favorite and Best' to rest..........IMO, the 'Best player ever to put on a Iona uniform was in his freshman year Gary Springer Sr...You don't win 'Freshman of the year' unless you are that good...But for knee problems in his last 3 years, he might have developed fully into a Basketball name to remember...At aprox. 6-8, he could do it all...Despite his debilitating injuries he still finished out is career as a above average player...
To those that saw, and remember is Freshman year there is little doubt you would agree........To those that were to young, you missed the best...

Surprised nobody has brought up Steve Burtt Sr and Jr being at the game on Friday. Had a chance to talk to Sr briefly. Great guy. It's pretty shocking that Iona hasn't retired his jersey. Anybody know why this hasn't happened yet?
Jr is also a very bright guy. He's home trying to get back to a top league in Europe. He doesn't lack for confidence either. He thinks he would average 35 PPG in Cluess' offense. :-)

Probably would have averaged 28-30 his senior year in Cluess offense, he averaged 25 in rulands. Number should definitely be retired, the one and two scorers of all time shared it. I guess it hasn’t yet because they never retired a number until Guerin a few years back. They probably think Ruland should be next but realize his relationship with school is not the best and don’t want to piss him off any further by retiring Burtt’s first. They should probably go ahead and offer Ruland the retired number night next year and if he declines do it for the burtts. Also slightly awkward do you retire just Burtt snr. Or both. More appropriate just snr. But they shared the number so maybe do both.

He was a 4-year player, by far our leading scorer of all-time, and went on to an NBA career. While Ruland was a transformational player for Iona, his relationship with the school is far too complicated to be in consideration. Burtt has no baggage at all. He deserves it.

Good find! Also have Kevin Hamilton and Ron Naclerio, 38 year Cardozo HS coach who regularly attended Iona games and helped with recruiting NYC kids.

Would highly recommend listening to the podcast. It was a 2-hour conversation with some great stories about Ruland, Valvano, Brother Driscoll, the recruiting process and the NYC hoops scene back in the golden era.
