Crystal ball-RM will be MVP of 2019 MAAC TOURNEY GAELS GET IT DONE You were right! More importantly Ricky McGill has become an Iona legend. Think he would have been known as a good player with a good career, but this win separated him to an Elite status. He is now a legend and a likely Iona hall of famer (not sure he gets there without the 4th championship). Also the McGill Cam put him in the national limelight, the greatest Iona basketball winner of all time!

Agreed. McGill is on a pedestal by himself at this point. Just a winner and I think should go down as the greatest leader we've ever had.

It was more effective because he was not on the floor - he laid it all out there for all to see - truly the MVP. I saw a future head coach at work on that cam - just not sure of head coach of what. Can't imagine a team not responding to that leadership. For those of you who at the game, tee up the replay after you get over the hangover.

Great family and support system all around. I will never forget his first game as a freshman against Valpo. Many on the trip said they were underwhelmed and he wasn't a D1 level player. Seemed like a prime transfer candidate. Boy, did he come a long way. He is a great example of an overachiever and someone whose work ethic enabled him to reach beyond his limitations. Give 59 credit on this one. Believe he was an early supporter of Rickey's and believed he could be an impact player in ways that many of us didn't.

Watched him dominate play in HS and know his parents commitment to athletics. Coached against him in football where he was also a better than average player. Have you ever seen his mom’s athletic accomplishments? It’s in the genes... www.rctfhalloffame.com/sherry-murphy-mcgill.html

Despite that, I don't think any of us could've expected him to reach the level that he has. He has become a 4-time champion, 2-time all-league player, and is in a conversation that NO Iona student-athlete has ever been in. Not to take anything away from his high school accomplishments or his family pedigree, but I think he achieved more than any of us could've imagined, and it wouldn't have been possible without his heart and work ethic.

When Rickey and his cousin, Kai Mitchell were coming to Iona, I thought that Kai was the better recruit. I asked Jared Grasso who he was more excited by (expecting the usual, I'm excited by both), JG said, "Rickey is the better player". Showed that coaches know more than fans or at least some fans.

Just read about Machado on Iona site. Hard to believe that he only made NCAA tourney once--and that one was the at-large bid. Rickey's teams earned 4 consecutive. WOW!

It is hard to believe that Machado only went once and rickey has been to 4 What do you attribute this to? I attribute it to an Overall down MAAC but I think a lot has to do with Cluess. He has grown so much as a coach since he has gotten here. If you could put the experience Cluess has now with the talent he had back a few years I think we do some damage in the NCAA tourney. Maybe in the years to come... maybe Friday. PS. I am avid reader of this site with minimal posts. Super I always appreciate your insight.

I have followed Rickey and Kai more than any other high school ballers over the last 20 years. Rickey always had leadership qualities, worked his ass off and had a more mature approach to playing compared to his peers. He was tough and never backed down from any player.
Kai just oozed talent. Soft touch shooting the ball and would just take over games. The question mark I always had regarding Kai was the fact he would "float" during games and not play that hard until some sort of switch went off in his head. Then he would dominate offensively and off the boards. Kai is now playing at Sam Houston State where he averaged 12.2ppg and 7.5 rebounds and was the recipient of the Southland Conference's Newcomer of the Year Award, as well as being named Third Team All-Conference. It is a shame that he did not end up a Gael as he would have been a nice addition to the team. IMHO, if Kai had Rickey's indomitable spirit, he would have been almost unstoppable at the mid-major level.
