Does anyone know if we are involved with former Mount Vernon player Noah Morgan? He is a 6'5" SG who averaged 11ppg and 4.9 rpg while shooting .436 from the three while a freshman at FDU. This year at Northwest Florida State (JUCO), he averaged 8.9 ppg and 3.2 rebounds while shooting .406 from the 3. The team was run around former Buffalo guard Javion Hamlet and 3-Star PG Chris Duarte who originally committed to play for Oregon. Morgan dropped 16 points and had 10 rebounds against us last year.

Just saw on Twitter he has official visits set up the next few weeks with Eastern Michigan and Albany. No mention of Iona.

I don't understand our reluctance on recruiting him. Local kid who could help rebuild our relationship with one of the best public HS programs in the NE. We have taken kids who were far bigger unknowns than Morgan is.

What you need to understand is there are 800 transfers out there and with limited scholarships we need to be very picky on who we take, obviously there are many kids we are in touch with,TC will make the right decisions,he knows more than you or me do.
With all these transfers and limited scholarships, it has to be extremely difficult to know who to go after and when to do it. You don't want to sell your self short but at the same time you want to end up with at least one or two decent players. Honestly I am not sure how D-1 coaches work with this system. Seems like a lot may just come down to luck, you lose a grad transfer at at about the same time a grad transfer at the same position becomes available. Very hard to navigate this craziness!

Yeah, will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Staff appears to be involved with a lot of interesting recruits. Thing is, on paper. There is currently only 1 open scholarship. The obvious need is a PG. There is also a need for a "big" since as the current roster stands all of the bigs next year will be seniors. The fact the staff took Ortale with the 1st scholarship gives me the impression they are expecting a few players to leave.

I’m pretty sure Iona did offer him when he was at MVHS. As they did with Calixte and Douglas-Stanley.
Let’s face it, no one over at MVHS seems to be doing Iona any favors.
Recovery from the hip surgery or the NCAA loss? Just kidding, We are all use to the latter and of course this year was expected. First half was a lot of fun!
As for the hips it's been almost 5 months, I'm doing very well, thanks! Doctor said eventually I won't notice my hips, I'm getting there but not quite yet.

sharkey, a few comments on your latest post... One, I honestly believe we will have a few new players next season. As you’ve stated, “Staff appears to be involved with a lot of interesting recruits”. We always have attrition going from one year to the next; there will be more than one scholarship to fill. Two, having watched Gist handle the offense, breaking the press, showing evidence of leadership, taking the ball to the hoop, outside shooting results and knowing coach likes the 3PT game from all five positions, I do not feel the most pressing need is for a PG. Three, also believe we will land a couple of 6’6”-6’8” types who can shoot the 3, defend and rebound...

Yup, we only know a small fraction of what we're doing out there. And for all we know, we may have made moves to get a kid like Morgan or one of the Brooklyn Collegiate guys Sharkey loves, but perhaps those guys aren't interested in us. We don't know, so it's likely not fair to assume we haven't tried.
I love the transfer market. It's a safer bet than a JUCO kid and certainly over a freshman. Grad transfers are nice because of their experience, but admittedly it sucks to have them for just 1 year . OK to have 1-2 of those on the roster but I wouldn't go more than that. But transfers with at least 2 years, especially guys who have done something, are generally safer bets than JUCOs, with the exception of JUCOs who performed well at a D1 prior to going to the JUCO.
I liked the Hugley kid from CCSU and we've lost him to ETSU. Oh well. There are other 6-7 athletes on the market. I'd like to get one of those and as noted by others, a pure PG.
Also think if anyone is going to transfer out, we should know soon. I know we learned about Casimir pretty late but I think that's the exception.

Agree and disagree with the above. First, I don't think we will have "a few new players" as that suggests heavy turnover is coming--I don't think the turnover will be all that heavy. Just a hunch on my part. Second, I agree that, if we got no one else, Gist can man the point. He's not traditional and I don't think would suddenly rack up a ton of assists, but he without question got better as the season went on. His improvement was as much a reason for our turnaround as anything. All of that said, I know he's going to log heavy minutes next year, probably 35+ per game, but you have to have another player who can handle the point. What if Gist (knock on wood) gets hurt? I don't know if McNeil is that guy. Perez can do some spot duty but not long-term. So, I do think we need one more ballhandler--a pure PG type like Ibn from a couple years ago, or a non-flashy grad transfer combo guard like Cassell who can run the show if needed. Just more options, even if Gist is the man for the vast majority of the time.
