It would be great if they had some video, especially of the ending. The crowd was standing and roaring as Iona dribbled out the clock. Iona owned New York for a night.
I was only 11 but it still is one of my greatest fan memories. If I had to rate the 3 greatest moments of my sports fandom, it would be the Mets 86 world championship, this game and the very next night when the U.S beat Russia, crazy that in 24 hours 2 of the 3 happened.

I was a freshman. The last few minutes the crowd was roaring and never stopped as Iona kept beating Louisville’s attempts to press; one easy basket after another. Ruland was a man among boys the entire game. Electric atmosphere at the Garden.

We owned NY for one night and one day, as we made the back pages of both the News and the Post. Great times. Great memories.

The greatest night in Iona basketball history. Pete Manieri told a story. One of the Louisville assistants on the bench said to Denny Crum, “what should we do?”.Denny replied, “ we are going to get our ass whipped tonight. “ After the game, standing on the northwest corner outside the Garden , Jimmy V and Dick Vitale making their way through the cheering crowd to a bar across the street. Great memories!

Remember the game well. Louisville was lucky the game ended when it did as the Gaels became more dominant as the game went on. Brought my two sons (15 & 12 at the time) to the game and their biggest memory was of Mark Aguirre (DePaul) walking around with a “boom box” on his shoulder the size of a suitcase. The preliminary game had DePaul vs. Wagner as I recall. Could be wrong on Wagner as it has been 40 years!

Wagner put a scare into them. The Garden started filling up in the second half of that game. #2 Louisville (eventual national champs) totally dismantled in front of 19,000 passionate people. Sat under the basket, which made it difficult to see once everyone was standing in the second half. Great memory.

It would be great if they had some video, especially of the ending. The crowd was standing and roaring as Iona dribbled out the clock. Iona owned New York for a night. Iona has it. A few years back, I was given a DVD/copy of the game by a member of the Advancement Office. As expected, the video is pretty grainy compared to today's standards and it's the (stunned) Louisville broadcast/play-by-play team calling the game complete with local Louisville commercials. Very entertaining.

Iona should hand out copies on DVD or thumb drives at the game. Or at least upload a copy on their youtube website. Not sure if this hasn't been done though due to copy rights.

Having gone to Iona games for 53 years, there's no doubt that this was the most memorable. Like Joebird, I was also happy that the US hockey team won the next evening. I then realized that the publicity about our incredible victory would be short-lived. I remain friendly with Kevin Hamilton who can recall every play in the game.
Jeff Ruland's performance was incredible!

I can still remember his outlet passes to To Hamilton and Vickers on the fast break. It was surreal.
