It’s time for a thread to pull together the discussion that will dominate what’s posted on the board from this point on; what’s going to happen next season. Will Cluess return, changes among the assistant coaches, how recruiting recovers, you name it.
This season just seems too painful to continue to discuss.

If I’m being completely honest, I don’t have much faith that we will recruit the right guys. Look at the last 2 seasons, since Grasso left. Agee would be the only “strong” recruit and he’s regressed mightily. Washington was a big get for us but we didn’t have to exactly fend off tons of takers. Let’s break it down:
18-19 New Players Nikolic Hudson Agee Maxwell Perez
19-20 New Players Thiam McNeil Washington Cashaw Van Eyck
Not exactly on par with Grasso’s greatest hits. Who on the staff can attract good players? Can any of them?

Hard to argue against your points, but would point out that the new staff has brought in highly touted recruits — they just haven’t panned out as hyped. Jelly was a Big 10 impact transfer, McNeil was a JUCO All-American honorable mention with offers from BCS schools, Thiam was hyped as being just as good as Agee. Grasso was an amazing recruiter, but also was known for finding diamonds in the rough — AJ, Armand, Casimir, EJ — all of these players were overlooked coming out of HS and turned out to be all-time recruits for us.

I can't think of his name but the coach Grasso took was also a recruiter who would go to the juco tournament and come back with a kid or two every year

This is everything for a program like ours. We need someone who finds these diamonds. It’s how it’s always worked for us...for 20-40 years. We need a grinder who finds diamonds through hard work and connections. Not sure we have that right now.

Before coming to Iona, Brock was a JUCO coach in Florida (coached Isaiah Williams) and Monroe College in New Rochelle.
