Valvano did not coach at Providence--sorry Rick. "I know one person I'm going to hire."

Gonna say this once and then gonna let it go. Pitino has a past. The paying for the abortion thing, kind of unsavory, but I'm a pro-choice Catholic. If the woman wanted the abortion, paying for it means nothing to me. I also disagree with the Church on capital punishment. I'm for it in limited circumstances, same with my position on abortion.
The extra-marital affair thing I don't care about. Not something I would do, but that's between his wife and him.
The Louisville stuff he said he didn't know about. An indictment quoted a guy saying he did. In any event he was fired from Louisville. At best this is neglect with respect to institutional oversight - he was responsible for keeping tabs on his assistants. That can't happen at Iona and hopefully this is where Coach Cluess can help, not as a compliance officer or cop, but reminding the assistants this can't happen at Iona.
If Pitino is genuinely interested in redeeming his reputation and going out as one of the "good guys," being honest about his past mistakes at Louisville and sharing with his assistants and players that they cost him, and counseling his assistants and players to be good people as well as good athletes can go a long way to redemption. Success or not I would be happy for him.

Must read interview. Plans to coach the same defensive system, but adding offensive sets he learned in Greece. Will recruit transfer and kids that can play right away and then the more traditional way. Already has one assistant coach he knows he is hiring I guess this changes Iona’s current recruiting targets. Going forward, maybe we’ll have some insight.

Hey everyone! New to posting on the board but long-time reader. I'm graduating from Iona in May and want to keep up with and talk Iona Hoops! It felt like the perfect time to officially join the board as we start the Pitino era. I want to first say thank you to Coach Cluess for his 10 years of dedication to Iona College, the student-athletes, and the community. I got to witness 3 of the 4 straight MAAC Championships as a student and will always cherish that. He will be truly missed and I am on board with the Cluess Center idea!
With that being said, I am very excited about the Rick Pitino hire. Welcome! I hope he can first sustain the great culture of Iona Basketball by doing things the right way. I'm sure he wants to finish his coaching career with integrity. Secondly, I hope he can try to get us to the next level in terms of recruiting, scheduling, and NCAA Tournament success! Coach Pitino has tons of connections, experience, and new facilities that I hope will help him get some impact recruits. All in all a very exciting day that all of us needed after the last few weeks.
Looking forward to talking with you all and Go Gaels!
