Warren or Joe to his friends, was a great player and a terrific coach. He was my coach in 1973 -74 on the JV. We also played pickup ball together for several years from 1974 thru about 1981 whenever he was in New York with some great D-1 and pro players. Warren was a beast! In his years in Italy he bulked up quite a bit and no one could keep him off the rim! Great hands and soft touch around the rim. He was also deceptively quick getting down the court, loved to run by his man. If you walked into a gym anywhere in the Metro area, with Warren, every one knew and respected his game. He was signed by the Nets, at some point in the early 70's and came back from Italy, however he was cut in a last second deal. I know he went back and forth to Italy, eventually became the head national coach as well as the head coach of a D-1 team for years. No doubt he was a real smash success over there and I hope he is enjoying life and staying strong and healthy. In my opinion he certainly is one of the greatest players we have ever had and certainly the best in his ERA! Oh by the way, in my days, from 1972-3 thru 1973-4 we never played any games in O'Connell Gym, we primarily played at the Mount and at the Prep a couple of times. Go Gaels!

SLG, there was another player on Warren Isaac' freshman team, that I thought would become a star, George Hopkins, 6'4 SF from McBurney Prep. Unfortunately, this was before the time when we provided Tutoring to athletes and George never made it to the varsity. A big loss for the Gaels. And before I forget, there was a third member of that freshman team who went on to have a very nice basketball career. Anyone know who (or is it whom)?

IONA86, I don't think that a single player on the list actually played at O'Connell Gym. Unless, you count Iona's George Carter, as opposed to a guy from St. Bonaventure by the same name. I KNOW we played against Dave DeBuschere (Sp?) at MSG. Also, played Dayton and the Dukes there as well. UMASS was at MSM and at Iona Prep. Also, pretty sure we never played NYU at O'Connell.
As for the Gym's location, I had to look at my yearbook. It was right next to the old Prep, now LaPenta. The parking garage was built on the Prep's football field. And there was no road between O'Connell and LaPenta at that time. The back end of O'Connell took up the space of what is now the east end of the HAC. I believe it was torn down when Mulcahy was built.

IC59 ... I remember John Holland in this era. He was a small forward and a prolific leader. Where does he fit ?

John Holland was one of the greatest leapers in Iona BB history. Unfortunately, he was 6'1 and his game was as a forward, but he had a guard's body. An exciting player to watch, but the teams he played on weren't VG. Maybe a younger guy can help. Was the John Holland who played at Boston Univ. related to our John Holland?

Nice input. We'll put him on our All Professor team.

IC59 O’Connell gym was before my time. Where on campus was it. I heard it was a prefabricated army building. How many seats did it have and how many games did Iona play there every year? Do you know when it was torn down? By the way Barry Kramer was one of several great players to come out of Schenectady in the 60’s. Two others were Pat Riley who went to Kentucky and Dick Grubar who went to North Carolina. Where the Parking Garage is now. It has been a long time since I was on the Iona Campus - Rider game in Jeff's final season and one of our 2 wins that season. I think I am being more accurate with placing O'Connell at the entrance to the Parking Garage.

SLG, next time you're in New Ro and Iona go to the Library or the Alumni House and ask for a copy of an ICANN, late fifties, and inside the front cover you'll see an arial view of the College. The changes from Iona of today is amazing. And looking at it, you might say that it is at the entrance of the parking garage, but that's not how I would describe it. The back of O'Connell seems to line up perfectly with the back of the Prep building (just south of it). The road that leads into the garage would have gone right through O'Connell.

Don't understand why Mount Saint Michaels gets so little love from Iona fans. Consider all the Iona greats that have come from MSM: Guerin Savarese Carey Mazzella A-Rod
We've done very well by the Mount.

To paraphrase the late, great broadcaster, Bill Stern, "John Carey did indeed play for Archbishop Molloy HS, but I was talking about our current president, SEAMUS Carey. And now you know the rest of the story."
