If the rules are changed so that the students can get paid by the highest bidder school AND the sit 1 year rule is ended, Where are all the talented players going to go? Hint NOT the Maac. Even an AJ English, with just 1 division 1 offer would have left Iona after his sophomore or junior year for Rhode Island or Providence or Umass etc. Low and mid majors are finished.
Just wanted to add when the $$$ and transfer rules both come into play, The head coach loses some of his influence. Right now, what the Head coach says, Goes. The agents, the paid players and boosters are going to have some more influence in decisions. When these two rules go into effect the Maac will be feeding talent upwards every year. Big East will recruit from the A-10 and the A-10 will recruit from us EVERY year. The talent that will be coming out of the Big East and A-10 (flowing downhill) will not nearly match the talent going up. Guys like AJ English would be in URI or Providence by his junior year. Momo? wouldn't have needed a waiver, would have ended up at St. John's with 50k check from the vitamin-water guy. I think having Coach Pitino will shelter Iona, somewhat for a couple of years, but if those 2 rule changes are coming, College hoops is going to be very different in 5+ years.
The NCAA might be writing it's own death certificate.
For years there has been talk of the power conferences establishing their own championship tournament, leaving the NCAA completely out of it. These rules changes would likely nudge that plan ahead. So yes, the NCAA is making itself vulnerable.
