Guy, did you have any Physical Therapy? Usually, they try that (conservative approach) before going under the knife.

So, about 3 weeks ago my son and I installed replacement attic pull-down steps. My back had some minor soreness the next day, so I figured I just strained a muscle and didn't think much of it. However, over the next week the pain steadily worsened until I could no longer walk without aid. Two MRIs and a failed steroid injection later, here we are. And this is considered essential surgery rather than elective because of my lack of functionality--that's why I was able to get it scheduled so soon (2 weeks).
