Just committed. Here's I86's preview of him from a month ago. Walter Clayton - 6'3" PG out of Bartow High School in Florida. Rated a 3★ recruit by Rivals. Averaged 15.4 points, 4.3 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals in leading his team to Class 6A Florida basketball state championship. As a sophomore, he played for Lake Wales High School, was a first-team, all-county selection in basketball averaging 17.5 points per game. Offers: Tulsa, Florida A&M, ELON, UNC_Wilmington, South Florida, Stetson, FGCU, Jacksonville, East Carolina and ETSU Interest: from Louisville and Virginia Tech. Walter is also a very good football player (3★ Rivals) as he has offers from ND, Georgia, Tennessee, Old Miss, Nebraska, Cincinnati, Florida and Florida State. Was considering not playing football last season but was talking into playing. He claims his passion is for hoops and that is what he wants to play in college. Was a quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive back.

I'm going to take that to mean that you guys have questions re the practice of recruiting players beyond the roster limit.
And I'd recommend you listen to my latest podcast episode for the logic behind it.

Ha..I wwwas too busy blowing this up on Twitter and fighting on the MAAC board. I really like this kid. Had higher level offers from the AAC and other conferences. Clayton is a 2 sport star who will now concentrate on basketball so should see his game take a solid jump in development. He holds HM football offers at 6'3" which means the kid is very tough and a great athlete. Tremendous upside.

As far as recruiting over the limit I have no problem with it. Iona fans have spoiled by not having tons of kids transfer out for the most part because Iona was recruiting older kids. Worked great for Cluess as his 10 year run proves. But times are different now under Pitino recruiting mostly HS kids. Get used to change and likely losing a couple kids every year. While they will be losing out on being coached by Pitino, they also want to play. Lots of competition with so many kids in the freshman and sophomore classes.
Let's not forget the craziness of the recruiting world this cycle. Pitino took commitments from kids just off of video while kids committed to Iona without actually visiting the campus. That could lead to some " shaking out".

In the past, we did not know who was going to be on this year's roster until September. Now they have to process early commitments from freshman a year and a half out from their first season as a Gael.

Did a little research. He performed very well last summer playing in the NIKE AAU circuit, the highest level. He also was selected to play in the CP3 all star game, competing against some of the best talent in the country. He's also a great football player with multiple HM offers. Not that in tune with football recruiting but his position is "athlete", whatever that means, but obviously at 6'3" he must be a incredibly athletic kid to get the level of offers he got. This kid, now concentrating on basketball, might turn out to be a steal.
