Given that it's starting to feel like we may not get to watch games in person this season at all--or, at best, at a very limited capacity at Hynes--we have to start thinking about online viewing options. IC59 asked in another thread about game coverage, and I have to think every game we play will be available for viewing, be it on TV or online. We'll know more about that as the season gets closer, I'm sure.
Still, though, experiencing Iona games "together" is where the joy comes for many of us. As you guys know, our chat room is active for all games, and naturally it's more active for road games. It's a nice way to view games "together" when we're not there in person. And because it appears we'll all be watching games from our homes this season, I plan on paying to expand the chatroom to unlimited users. As you'll recall, the free version we use now caps the room at 10 people, and often some folks got bumped from the room during games last year. You'll also remember that I paid for the unlimited user feature when we had Jaden Daly on in the chat. It doesn't cost that much and I don't mind doing it, as it will enhance our experience this season assuming we continue on the COVID path we're on.
I had another thought, and I have to think Brian Beyrer and others at Iona have discussed this to some extent, but it's also entirely possible for there to be "virtual watch parties" for every game this season. I don't know how this would look at all, but certainly we can envision some sort of large group zoom call so that we can all gab with each other while watching a game. This is the exact same idea as the chatroom, just taken a step further and made more "personal" I guess. I don't know if such an element is "needed" to watch a game, and really it's something I could even do myself as I have a Zoom account through my job and could host such a thing (though I have no idea how many people I could host), but is it even desired? I am thinking probably not. When we were planning the Daly chat, I asked this question: would you guys rather do it via chat, via phone, or via zoom, and chat won out. So, maybe I'm overthinking it all, and just expanding the chatroom for the season is all that's needed. And like I said, it's possible Iona may do some sort of watch party themselves, even if not for all games, possibly for select games.
Anyway, was just thinking about all of this, and you're all welcome to comment as always!
