Morgan state lost at home to Mt. St Mary's and beat a d2 team fairly close, but I agree they looked good today. We are going to be very inconsistent, at least for first month or two, so many new inexperienced pieces.
On a positive note: BJL is a player!!

We all knew this team would struggle early, mostly newcomers who never played together before and all players adjusting to Pitino's system plus no Gist or Shema who were penciled in to be starters. I think we got sidetracked a bit by the performance at Hofstra and expected that we turned the corner quicker than expected.
One thing that is evident is that there is talent on this team and Pitino will pull them together but it will take some time.
BJL with a great game today 15 points 11 rebounds and 4 steals.

They out-energized us. Simple as that. Outside of BJL we were quite flat.

This year is a crap shoot given all the variables this program is dealing with. Would be a challenging year even without the COVID issues.

Lot's of outstanding components that for the most part are young and inexperienced.
Expect inconsistency. This team needs time to gel.
Ground expectations and keep the faith.

4 observations:
1) Our bigs can’t defend the perimeter. SH and MS exploited that. Hofstra couldn’t because Kante can’t shoot.
2) I miss Cluess’ wide open offense. We took if for granted all those years, obviously. It was a thing of beauty, obviously.
3) DVE looked good passing the ball at the top of the key or after picks. Get him out there more.
4) Chavez will be better coming off picks without the ball in his hand...I hope.

OK. Let's not over-react. For those of you on the ledge after this sub-par performance. It is very early in a completely wacked season. Kansas State got hammered yesterday by Fort Hayes State. Not sure where we will end up, but we played lousy yesterday. Doesn't necessarily mean we have a lousy team. I felt the same way after Saturday when they played well against a Hofstra team that is in the same situation we were last year (No coach). Again, we might be good, we might be mediocre. I think we will know more in a few weeks.

My greatest concern about the loss was not the poor defense, because I'm hoping that can improve, but rather our inability to get IR 3pt shots. The announcers said that MS was face guarding him, and that led to a few easy backdoor baskets, but no three pointers, his/our staple. Over the years RP has probably run into this defense on multiple occasions, so I'm thinking we'll be better prepared going forward. We better be. JMO.

The MAAC stinks, we'll be fine based on that alone.

My concern there is that Ross didn’t seem to be able to get open for three when guarded that tightly - maybe the defense was just that good. Maybe that was their whole game plan. If so, it worked. Their other game plan was to have their bigs make 10 3s. That def. worked.

In my simple world, the culprit in this game was defense. Ours allowed more points in transition than a Cluess team enjoyed in their wildest dreams. Their defense exposed our greatest weakness - point! This is not on Ross. He made adjustments; back door baskets, and he got some looks - not many good looks. Was that Pitino's other brother on the Morgan State bench? We were so desperate for point play that we rushed Gist into the game - broken pinky be damned. In those few minutes we saw a glimpse of getting others involved. Time to take off the rose colored glasses - have to get to work.

Morgan St took Ross right out of his game, when that happens it usually means some else has been left open to step up and score, didnt happen.
