"Finian 2Finnian of Clonard (Cluain Iráird) is called “the tutor of the Irish saints”; Colmcille of Iona and Ciarán of Clonmacnois were among his students at his monastery in Clonard, Co Meath. The image shows St. Finnian and his pupils in a stain glass window at the Church of St. Finian in Clonard. Clonard became a highly influential monastic centre until the diocesan structure was set up in the 12th century. . . .
Finally, around the year 520 Finnian arrived at Clonard, “Erard’s Meadow”, between the kingdoms of Meath and Leinster. Here he got a large tract of land to set up his own ascetic community, where there were up to 3,000 monks. These included the so-called “twelve apostles of Ireland”, who are variously listed. Normally however they include: St Brendan of Birr, St Brendan of Clonfert, St Canice, St Ciarán of Clonmacnoise, St Ciarán of Saighir, St Colmán of Terryglass, St Colmcille of Iona, St Mobhí of Glasnevin, St Molaise of Devenish and St Ruan of Lorrha. Finnian himself had a great reputation for his knowledge of the Scriptures and Clonard became a centre of Biblical studies." [Catholicireland.net]
"Where is he going with this", you ask (maybe)? Why is relevant today?
More to come!

SLG, thanks. History is always interesting. And for me, Irish history is even more so. And sports related, I'm still waiting to greet our first athlete recruited from the Isle of Iona.

Baptismal Font from the 15th century, which is currently located behind the church altar. It is an awesome piece of history in no small part because you can go right up it and touch it. I don't know why it is not better protected.

Time to start making this personal. Clonard, where St. Columba was educated by St. Finian is part of the Parish of Kinnegad - my hometown and my home parish. My parents are buried in Clonard Cemetery, as are two of my sisters. Their burial site is about 100 ft from the church. Click on the links above for more on Clonard Church.

SLG, I thought that I had already posted this, so excuse this post if a similar one shows up. I asked if you were born in Ireland, emigrated to the US and then were educated at Iona. Or were you raised in Ireland and your connection to IC is because of "our" mutual connection to St. Columba?

St. Finian established the monastery at which St. Columba was educated. There is a "Prep" school located about fifteen miles from the Clonard monastic site named St. Finian's College.
Yours truly is a graduate of St. Finians. Coincidentally, I just learned as part of my research that a much revered St. Louisan is also a graduate of St. Finians - Cardinal John Glennon. He is also a native of my home town. '59, as a proud St. Louis Cardinal fan, may be aware of Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, a favorite recipient of STL Cardinal player donations of money and time.

SLG, now that you mentioned it, the name Cardinal Glennon does ring a bell, though one from years back. When I was a freshman at Iona Prep (1951), Allie Glennon, from Larchmont, was the star full back on the FB team.
B/t/w, did you have any formal education after St. Finians?

Well; I did spend four years at the Beechmont, Village Inn, Georges, with an occasional trip to the Barge. Formal enough for me!
