Didn't want to clog up the '22 recruiting thread with this topic, but unless Congress comes out with legislation within a couple of weeks which doesn't sound likely, the NIL can possibly have a impact in recruiting.
Six states have NIL legislation set to begin as early as 7/1. Iona has recruits from two of those states, Georgia and Texas. Obviously, this will have a larger impact with HM kids but I'm sure it's still a recruiting pitch and possibly an advantage in recruiting.
As far as the MAAC is concerned CT is the only state that has NUL legislation in place, currently only needs the Governor to sign off on it and it becomes effective 9/1/21. Fairfield and QPAC will soon have 2 of the top facilities in the MAAC and will likely soon have the added advantage of being able to sell NIL passage to recruits. Will these kids get rich? No. But with donors and their connections they can easily sell the opportunity to make a couple thousand dollars doing a signing at a sportscard show or business. Poor Isaiah Washington was before his time. With his jelly fam movement and the tremendous following he had he could have made some decent money, though I believe there is a cap.
Will be interesting how this develops over the next couple months and hear if recruits start mentioning it as part of their recruitment decisions. Interesting article below with one example on how it would work

sharkey, this might be a question for Guy to ask Casey Stanley, the next time he has him on the Podcast. How will it affect Iona's recruiting, if at all?

With NIL and no-sit transfers, the deck is stacked against most schools, iona included. The deep pocket schools will corner the market on talent. To me, i think you have to allow the athletes to retain agents now.

NIL begins at midnight. Will be interesting to see how much of an impact, if any, for MAAC programs. Think it will make it more difficult to beat out higher level programs for recruits.

They could have handled the issue better. NIL is going to add to team chemistry issues. Normal chemistry issues due to personalities, playing time, coach favoritism etc... just got compounded by 10. Selling autographs and signed jerseys is understandable. Corporate sponsorship by the NIKE's of the world is going to destroy college sports IMHO.

If it’s allowed in NYS would be a good project for the Hynes Entrepreneur Institute. It’s not only downside here; we’re in the most important metro region in the country.

Can you expand/explain. I dont see how this can help us. Maybe I’m wrong, but anytime Iona develops a good player, the boosters at Umass, St. Johns, Duquesne, even Siena will offer the player a chunk of money to put his picture on their key chains, coffee mugs etc and have him transfer to that school. Of course those schools will have their stars poached for bigger money to the Penn St, Michigan etc.

Can you expand/explain. There are marketing opportunities in the NY metro area. Huge ones because it’s a huge local market. Let’s not be myopic. It’s not all downside.

People don't care about Iona, you think they care about the Iona players 🤔 I don’t think most fans will care about paying for the autograph of the vast majority of players, at the vast majority of schools. Aside from a few mega stars, and P5 schools organizing some well attended fund raising opportunities, for most players/schools NIL will be a non-event. Especially when you consider the open secret that many P5 players have been paid for years already. This is really a continuation of the present status quo; just out in the open. People are really worried about Quinnipac or Siena boosters organizing autograph signings? Give me a break; that won’t move the needle. A smart school/player can find opportunities in the margins. That’s what it will take to compete. Better to be inventive than defeatist.

NIL has started, and a number of athletes are jumping on board. Just for the fun of it, is there an Iona BB player that you could see in a commercial? And while I don't have the product as of yet, I'd like to nominate our walk on, Parker Weiss. His hair and smile, along with the toughness that he shows by taking a charge seems made for a TV ad.
"Our product is Parker Weiss tough" "These shoes are made for walk ons" "He takes a licking (show him taking a charge) but keeps right on ticking"

They have 4 million followers on TikTok and Instagram. Head scratcher isn't it?

Another Ad suggestion. Iona Season Tickets:
"Ad shows Robert LaPenta standing in front of horses racing. If you think my horses run fast, wait until you see my Gaels run a fast break, and camera now shows the Gaels in action."
"If the job calls for a big man, how about six big men? Camera shows Iona BB players 6'8 and over."
