There is no doubt that X-C has been our most successful sport. And I see that their roster has been updated. We've added about a half dozen Distance runners, from Canada, Australia, Wales and Ireland. Does anyone know if any fall into the elite category?

Good question. Love the Cross Country team. So, the cop-out answer would be that they have been recruited by one of the top Division 1 programs in the country, so that alone makes them elite. I'll see what I can find out. At first glance the Cole brothers from Ontario seem pretty special. Finished 6th & 9th in the Ontario HS championships leading their team to the Gold medal. Dafyyd Jones seems like a decent 5K runner, but is young and probably needs development. Can't find any X Country info on him, so he may just be a track guy. I'll look up some of the others when I get a chance. BTW, the team goes into the season unranked. Have some votes so it looks like they are around 33-34. In this sport, the preseason ranking mean almost nothing. Won't know anything at least until Saturday's Marist meet and probably not until the Brother Doyle meet in a few weeks, which usually brings out some good competition.

Greg, great answer. Wasn't there a Pope, Gregory the Great? Any relation?

Two of the Freshman ran today. Andrew Fogarty and Jack O'Keefe. O'Keefe may be a star. Finished 6th overall. Team finished 2nd to Marist in meet. We'll see how good they are in a couple of weeks.

They never run their best guys in the Marist meet. I don't believe any of the non US new runners ran, so we'll have to wait a couple of weeks for a better feel on how the team will do.

Running all the veterans, the Cross Country team finished first comfortably in the Brother Doyle Meet of Champions. Ten points ahead of closest rival Army. Looks like the only Freshman to run was Jack O'Keefe. Looks like he ran well. Did not score for the team, but finished well ahead of many of the scorers for other teams. I'm thinking today's lineup will be most of the guys who go in the regionals and nationals when they come up. Congratulations Gaels!

If I had to guess, I'd say that only the DeSouza (Sp?) brothers, of the runners who competed, today, will run in the Regionals and Nationals. The Paul Short (no relation) Invitational, next week, will shed a little more light.

Is this the year the streak ends? Today at noon the MAAC Men's X-C championship takes place in Loudonville. Races so far have been lackluster and the noise about the event has been deafening. Is there a reason why we aren't hyping the longest streak in D1 X-C history? Stay tuned.

Top 3 finishers and 7 of the top 10. 44 points clear of the second place Siena squad.

Any idea how the women finished? Can't find results.

Unfortunately, the Women had their 10 year streak snapped as they finished third to Quinnipiac and Siena. The somewhat good news was that the five top Iona Women were freshmen, sophomores and a junior. I'm fairly certain that there will be an official press release, shortly. Congrats to both teams.
