My understanding is that the buyout was subsequently removed at some point after he signed his initial contract, presumably when they were negotiating an extension and failed to reach an agreement. So there is no proof that the buyout is gone? I think it was confirmed in the press that during the summer Carey was approached by Pitino and Carey agreed to remove it. |

You want me to pull up transcripts? No, but my buddy was the manager during Cluess four straight run and he had to check if they made class or not and report back. Said kids consistently skipped. Isaiah Washington also had a 0.9 GPA at one point when he was here. Cluess never coached Isaiah, Didn't John's get into a fight over grades? Every kid that played 4 years graduated under Cluess Didn't Pitino recruit a kid from DR without a transcript. I remember Cluess suspending Taj Ridley for a very important game against Fairfield because he missed a class. |

I’m not sure how Cluess got brought into this, but I don’t think this is a good thread to speculate on players’ academic standing. When Tim was here the program was pristine and the kids were great kids and to my knowledge there was no culture of academic non-compliance, and even if there was, it seems out of place for Pitino to be insinuating that through the press. Bottom line, I think we should keep this thread focused on our current coaching position and not on the past.

This was my understanding too. It is a bit of a surprise to hear what this guy posted. Cluess was pretty strict about going to class. I don’t know why you guys think Pitino would just make up that the basketball team wasn’t in good academic standing He also claimed he built all the facilities and raised the academic profile for the school. He also recently claimed that he accomplished what he set out to do at Iona... I do not recall us becoming the Gonzaga of the East. |

Let’s not get crazy. Maybe we are not where we expected to be at this point in the RP era and we are clearly all a bit sour over the SJU speculation, but there is no way we can say our program is worse off with RP. That is a ridiculous statement. I believe the guy has a better winning percentage in a three year period than any coach in Iona history, he has beaten Top 10 teams, he has gotten us a 13 seed, he has recruited great talent and even better kids, he has sold out the HAC and created a better in-game atmosphere than we have had in decades. We should not be building statues for him any time soon, but we also should not be saying he has made the program worse. We 100% will be in a worse place if he leaves this year. We spent way more$$$, for the same results, might have no roster, no school, no tournaments planned. So you want him to stay. |

I recall Cluess suspending David Laury for being 10 minutes late for an 8AM class. |

Believe the locker rooms and weight rooms were already part of a two phased facilities improvement project that was underway when Cluess was coach. The first phase was the remodeling of the arena. |

This has been a very good thread with a lot of good opinions. I have always thought that RP would return to Iona. I hope he does for the sake of the players. I guess we will know soon.
He has always spoken about his love for the players. I hope that he does right by them. It is beyond my control so I'm ok which ever way it turns out.

I agree with the many on here who have said that Iona will be just fine regardless of the decision. Our AD is one of the reasons why we can have that positive outlook.
