During the season last year I ended up scaling back on the number of episodes because: 1) I ended up traveling for work quite a bit; and 2) I saw a significant drop in listenership when dropping weekly eps. I had said late last season that I'd go away from doing the "game recap/preview" format because of cutting back, instead moving forward more with "state of the Gaels" reviews and of course regular MAAC-focused guests to just give their takes on the league (rather than preview specific games), particularly after the holidays.
I think that is indeed going to be my plan as the games get going this season, more or less. But I wanted to ask you guys if there's anything I could be doing to make the in-game episodes more valuable, or anything in addition. One idea that was mentioned at some point, for those of you on Twitter, was to hold a Twitter spaces immediately after the press conferences of any game I'm at. What this would entail would be, say for a Friday night home game, going "live" from Hynes on Twitter (audio only) probably around 9:45 or 10 pm, to give some quick takeaways and share any morsels from the press conference. I would try to keep these short, maybe 15-20 min tops (although of course if we lose I can see those ones going an hour LOL), and it is something that's more "interactive" as those who join could also come on live and share comments. What does everyone think of that? We can always try one and see how it goes, or we can also do it for select games rather than every game. I say this noting that many of you know Jaden Daly hosts MAAC Twitter Spaces often during the season, with folks like me, Sam Federman and Frank Aquino on, so of course I wouldn't do Iona ones that conflict with those.
Anyway, if you're a regular listener, please share thoughts re the podcast and what would make in-season episodes more valuable. If you're NOT a regular listener, tell me what you think my podcast needs to turn you into one. And finally, let me know if you think something like an Iona Twitter Spaces after select home games would be something you'd tune into, regardless of whether you'd come on live to share your thoughts. Thanks!

OK, I'll take a shot. For the podcast, maybe regularly including one of the more tuned-in board members for a more lively fan-based perspective. Like a Sharkey, I-86, there's a bunch of them. Maybe a little lively debate - what the team did wrong, what they did right. That kind of thing. Or just have Joebird, I-70 and 59 on together and have them fight it out (kidding about that one).
For the Twitter Spaces I'd be all in. Love the idea. Like a post-game show. Only problem would be with home games, some fans may still be travelling. For me, again it would be great as I miss quite a few home games. Maybe see how others feel. Hopefully there will be enough interest. Might want to move it to X also.
I'm all in for the twitter/X spaces, though like Greg mentioned, the main thing to figure out is timing as fans head home from the HAC. However, they still can listen while driving home.
One way to possibly steal a few minutes for folks to get home, is give the MAAC results of that night before getting more specific about the Iona game.
On a similar note years ago, Josh Newman would do a spaces/podcast after Monmouth games on Twitter. I'm sure MAAC fans other than those from Monmouth would listen, especially those from the team that played Monmouth.
Having the added option of fans participating sounds like a home run and well worth giving it a shot
Guy, I might be missing the boat about you're requesting, but I have a couple of ideas of what I would most enjoy. However, I see a problem as what I want to hear might be what people who contribute to NIL are paying to hear. But, speaking for myself:
1. Have TA on. 2. Have an AC on, selling TA on how exposure of the AC helps his staff. 3. People associated with Iona BB such as Vin Parise, Kevin Hamilton and our "play by play" person. 4. Under-grads who are studying sports broadcasting. 5. Students who write for the Ionaian. 6. Have a segment with Matt Glovaski (one a semester) covering the entire Athletic Dept. 7. Since people are trying to fit the podcast into their schedules don't make them too long.
I’ll second 59’s request to have Matt on for an informational overview of the entire athletic department. There’s a ton going on that a number of us may not be aware of. Christ, I just learned today that breakdancing is now an Olympic sport!

Well, before you try out for the Olympics, I suggest you try to take down the other Board members.
The gameday Spaces wouldn't happen until after I'm out of the press conferences. So, for a typical 7 pm home game that ends 9ish, the press conferences don't wrap until at LEAST 9:45, which is good for many folks to get home I'd think. But as Sharkey noted, you can still listen even if you're in the car.
Of course, it doesn't HAVE to be a home game, either. Some road games would actually be BETTER for me to do them--for example, the games at Sacred Hearth, Fairfield or Quinny. And along those lines...I WILL be in the Bahamas--hosting a Space from there would be interesting! (But dependent on quality of Wifi in the facility).
I like the idea of having Matt G on! Will definitely work him into one of the upcoming episodes!
Not in love with the assistant coach idea. Even when Casey S was on, he was very guarded with what he could say. Same with Pat W--they just can't be as candid as a head coach. Not a lot of benefit from it IMO.
Re having fans on, I did do away with the "fan roundtable" but this may be a better alternative. I can think about it. Sharkey has been on a couple podcasts and will be on the next one (whoops, let that slip!). Remember that some folks would rather NOT be on, too.

Getting Tobin on; Matt G; and some of the clued in posters like I86, Sharkey, etc would be great. I also enjoy the segments with an “expert” on an opponent.

I like the state of the Gaels and the episodes being spread out more, the only new thing I can think of is a 5 minute one on one spot each episode with Tobin talking about the state of the Gaels, not sure that is possible though.
I have not been a Twitter space person and don’t think I would participate. I like coming home from games having a beer and casually catching up on Twitter and the Iona board, Then making my post game board post and reading others. Not sure I want to be engaged enough to listen to a live show and participate.

LOL. Joebird on Twitter at a post-game loss... sponsored by the Dr. Jack Kevorkian Gift Certificate Program.
Re the Tobin segments, remember that Gaels Nation + members can be on Zooms with Tobin throughout the season, so I'm not going to have exclusive regular time with him during the season. That said, I can get him on heading into that long Dec break--would be a good time to have him, 11 games in.

If I just let my emotions rule and said whatever I was thinking on a postgame twitter space I think I would be pretty entertaining, though it wouldn’t be long before I got myself in trouble. Half of me would love to participate and the other half wants no part.
When I was in college I would do play by play of live tv villanova games In front of my friends with the sound off, and I said whatever I thought with no restrictions, my friends loved it but this would not be good for me on Twitter spaces or any other public forum. I listened to marv albert doing radio knick games growing up and self taught my self how to do play by play from that. Loved the twist of being able to be very critical and negative when things went bad and over the top excited when things were going well. It was exhausting though!

Agree with the potential entertainment you'd provide!
I think I succeed in being what this board needs when it needs it. When things are wonderful and fans slip into a world of delusion, I remind us that we're a rinky dink school with a rinky dink budget and rinky dink fanbase. When things are in the crapper and fans are ready to off themselves, I remind us how fortunate we've been in our history compared with league peers and other similar sized programs, so stop acting like spoiled babies. Often these things happen in the same week!
