Saw on Twitter that the Iona men's soccer team is going to play a game at Giants Stadium against the Argentina National team. Now, I doubt this Argentina group will be their loaded roster, and in fact for all I know it's their U21 team. Details supposedly coming on ICGaels.com. Either way--I still think this is very cool, and I may go. I think it's this Sunday.

I really don't know what is going on with this story. From everything that I have been able to find, Saturday's game is what the soccer world refers to as a "friendly" (I think that would equate to an exhibition for us) between the Argentine National Team and the U.S. National Team. Whatever it is, from the attached article, it appears that 55,000 seats have been sold for Saturday's event which is also being broadcast on ESPN2 - would be quite a crowd if Iona is indeed involved. www.ussoccer.com/News/Mens-National-Team/2011/03/Lichaj-Added-for-Argentina-Paraguay.aspx

That is correct Doom. Usually college teams play the U-21 national teams in exhibitions. I would think if that were happening that it would be before the National team game. That is commonly the way they schedule these things. If that were the case, the game would be at 4:30 or 5:00 on Saturday.

Or, they could be playing the Argentine national team reserve squad, which usually happens the day after friendlies, that would then make sense that it was Sunday. hard to believe they would schedule that at Giants stadium and there is nothing on the Giant Stadium schedule indicating that.

Iona Men's Soccer is indeed playing the Argentine National Team at 11 AM Sunday at the New Meadowlands Stadium. Unfortunately the announcement says nothing about ticket prices or whether this may be a closed event. I checked on the stadium website - there is nothing whatsoever shown for any event on Sunday. Here's the announcement: www.icgaels.com//ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=14900&ATCLID=205122339

I do not have anything concrete; however, I have heard that Sunday's game at the Meadowlands may, in fact, be a closed event. That would seem to make sense considering the expense entailed in opening that arena for a public event.

This is a very nice arrow for Coach to have in his recruiting quiver.
"Kid, take a look at our schedule!"

The meadowlands has no record of this event. They should have announced it after it took place if it is not going to be open to the fans. They could have opened up a few sections, had people bring their own stuff and collected $30 a head and given the money for Tsunami victims. It could have been nice all around.

Apparently the announcement that I cited earlier has been taken down from the ICGaels.com website. I would guess that since the game is a closed exhibition, the announcement was causing more problems than it was worth.

Damn message board and twitter, nowadays it's impossible to keep things under wraps ;D
