From ESPN Rumor Central
Int'l play helps Machado diversify? 8:50 AM ET Iona Gaels TopEmailComments If the 2011 season is anything like the previous three seasons for Iona senior Scott Machado, it means the MAAC will once again be a foil for Machado. For the past three years, the guard has sliced through opposing defenses and carved up defensive schemes with deft passes that seemed to be turnovers but somehow escaped the hands of opponents. Paired with Mike Glover and the young-ish squad that should be the preseason conference favorite, Machado has a chance to not just lead the conference in assists but could also lead the nation.
To prepare for his final go-around in New Rochelle, Machado will spend the rest of his summer playing with the Brazilian National Team. Zach Braziller of the NY Post spoke to the Machado recently and the guard is excited for the experience, one which he believes will expand his skill-set: "It's gonna help me expand my game in a variety of ways ... I know I'm gonna have to adjust."
It took some time but eventually, Machado and company adjusted to Tim Cluess' offensive gameplan; once the team clicked, the Gaels were one of the toughest teams towards the end of the season. Machado's assist rate of 39.2 percent is outstanding but one figures it will grow after a season under Cluess paired with a summer of international competition.

It appears that there are four groups of six teams so Brazil's five opponents are: Romania, United Arab Emirates, China, Germany (Wed.) and the Czech Republic (Thu.). The championship rounds are Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The Brazilian team played three "friendlies" from what I understand in Germany prior to this tournament. All I was able to gather is that they won the first two and got beat up in the third in which Scott had 19. Also, the assist rule in FIBA ball is different than NCAA or NBA. It has to lead directly to a basket, no dribbles, post moves, etc.

Thanks for the post. It was great to see Scott. The Chinese team reminds me of a worse version of Marist.

Once again, the lesson to be learned - get the ball in Scott's hands and good things happen. There was one sequence where Brazil was throwing up aimless shots and came away without a score - the one player who seemed to never touch the ball was Scott.

Brazil lost to Germany 61 - 53. Scott and Fab Melo led Brazil in scoring with 13 each; however, Scott had a poor shooting day going 1 for 12 from the field. He did have an incredible (for International play) 7 assists which were the total number of assists for the entire Brazil team and 1 assist less than the entire German team. Today, Brazil also lost to the Czech Republic 85 - 69 to finish at 3 - 2 in their Group play tied with Romania and the Czech Republic. I have no idea whether they qualify for further play. Here is a link to the stats from the game against Germany (I was unable to find stats from the Czech Rep. game yet posted): www.eurobasket.com/boxScores/World%20University%20Games/2011/0817_GER_BRA.asp
